San Diego Family Vacation: Kids Free at the Zoo in October
What each paid anchor costs, which ages it suits, and the month the zoo stops charging.

Quick Answer
- October is the month to bring kids to San Diego: youths 11 and under enter the Zoo free with a ticketed adult, so two adults with two children aged 3 to 11 pay $156 instead of $292 (as of October 2026, source: San Diego Zoo).
- The city suits children roughly 2 to 15, and five days is the shortest trip that fits the Zoo, one beach day and LEGOLAND without three long drives.
- LEGOLAND California is built for ages 2 to 12 (as of October 2026, source: LEGOLAND California) and sits 33 miles north of downtown (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing), so it costs a full day and a car.
- Beaches carry no admission, and the city patrols 17 miles of coastline from nine permanent lifeguard stations (as of October 2026, source: City of San Diego).
- Budget $331 a night for a room and $40 a day for a car (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK), then take the category detail to our San Diego family vacation cost guide.
- Skip San Diego if your youngest is under 2 or you have three days or fewer: the FAQ below has the three-day plan, and our San Diego 4-day itinerary adds the fourth day.
- Also below: whether to book a vacation rental or a hotel, with 807 whole-home licenses left citywide and none at all in Mission Beach (as of September 2026, source: City of San Diego).
San Diego is a five-day city for a family with young children, and the reason is arithmetic. The Zoo, LEGOLAND and the Cabrillo tide pools sit at three corners of a 33-mile metro area, so each takes a day and a car.
Which ages San Diego suits, and how many days
San Diego works best for children roughly 2 to 15. LEGOLAND California sets the lower half: the park "is geared for children between the ages of 2 and 12" (as of October 2026, source: LEGOLAND California). The Zoo admits youths 2 and younger free, and anyone 15 or younger needs an adult 18 or older (as of October 2026, source: San Diego Zoo). Teenagers are the awkward band: LEGOLAND stops working for them while the surf starts to. Our guide to traveling with teenagers covers that trade.
Three days is a different trip, not a shorter one: one of the three paid anchors has to go, and it is LEGOLAND.
Apply the Skip-If Filter
- Skip San Diego if your youngest is under 2: you pay two adult prices for a trip pitched above your child.
- Skip it if you have three days or fewer: that buys two anchors and one long drive.
- Skip it if your on-the-ground budget is under about $1,800 for four. Four nights at the $331 city average is $1,324, and the car adds $160 before a single ticket (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).
- Skip it if the plan is ocean swimming in winter. The normal January high is 66.4 F with 1.98 inches of rain (as of October 2026, source: NOAA).
- Skip it if you want one resort and no driving: Carlsbad and Cabrillo on Point Loma sit at opposite ends of the paid map.
The best month to bring kids to San Diego
October is the best month to bring kids to San Diego: it makes the zoo free for children while the weather barely moves. Throughout the month, "youths 11 years and younger receive free admission" at the Zoo and the Safari Park, and each ticketed adult may bring up to six of them (as of October 2026, source: San Diego Zoo). The normal October high is 74.6 F against 75.3 F in July, seven tenths of a degree of trade for free admission.
The room rate is the real trade. The citywide average is $331 a night, against $275 in January and $423 in July (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). No October average was published on the same basis, so plan the room against the $331 city figure.
| Month | Normal high | Normal low | Normal rainfall |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 66.4 F | 50.3 F | 1.98 in |
| April | 68.8 F | 57.1 F | 0.65 in |
| July | 75.3 F | 66.1 F | 0.08 in |
| September | 77.2 F | 66.2 F | 0.12 in |
| October | 74.6 F | 61.5 F | 0.50 in |

What the San Diego Zoo costs and what the ticket includes
A 1-Day Pass Any Day is $78 for an adult and $68 for a child, and it includes the Guided Bus Tour and the Skyfari aerial tram (as of October 2026, source: San Diego Zoo). Two adults and two children therefore pay $292 for a zoo day in any month but October, when the same four pay $156.
Two cheaper routes exist on the same page. Value Days pricing drops the adult to $73 and the child to $63 (as of October 2026, source: San Diego Zoo). The 2-Visit Pass is $130 and $120 for "two total visits by the same person" in any mix of the Zoo and the Safari Park, so two Zoo days qualify. A family planning two days should also price membership, from $99.
Parking is a flat $16 per vehicle per day, and $44 for an oversized vehicle. Stroller rental is first-come, at $16 for a single and $20 for a double (as of October 2026, source: San Diego Zoo).
LEGOLAND California with kids 2 to 12
LEGOLAND California is the one anchor with a hard age range, and buying online is the only way to the discounted price. Tickets "start at $139 if purchased at the front gate" (as of October 2026, source: LEGOLAND California). Online, the theme park plus SEA LIFE ticket starts at $69 for an adult and $39 for a child. Two adults and two children in that band pay from $216, against from $556 at the gate.
Run the Real-Cost Test on that gap. Both figures are "Starting From" floors, and the $39 child rate requires "at least one (1) full-priced adult ... ticket in the same transaction" with "a limit of four (4) discounted child tickets per transaction" (as of October 2026, source: LEGOLAND California). The offer ends on November 1, 2026. Children under 2 are free, and adding the water park takes the two tiers to $124 and $69.
The park is 33 miles north of downtown San Diego, which is why it earns its own day (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing). Our San Diego against San Francisco comparison carries the same routing figures.
The beaches that work with small children
San Diego's beaches charge nothing to enter. The City of San Diego counts "17 miles of coastline and 4,600 acres around Mission Bay Park", patrolled from "nine permanent lifeguard stations" plus seasonal ones in summer (as of October 2026, source: City of San Diego). Those nine are stations, not a shortlist for small children: one is Black's Beach, where access is "very difficult due to the high cliffs", so leave it off a family list.
Four picks carry the ages. La Jolla Shores has the gentlest surf of the permanent nine, which makes it the swim for ages 3 to 8. Mission Bay Park is flat water rather than ocean, so it suits under-5s and non-swimmers. Mission Beach adds the boardwalk, which starts paying off around 6. The Children's Pool is viewing at any age rather than swimming, and it "is closed to public access during harbor seal pupping season, Dec. 15 through May 15, yearly" (as of October 2026, source: City of San Diego).
Swim near a lifeguard at all of them, and if a rip current takes you, "swim sideways until free" rather than against the pull (as of October 2026, source: City of San Diego). Coronado sits outside the city's nine permanent stations, so our San Diego beaches and outdoor guide carries it with the rest of the coast by age.
Cabrillo, Torrey Pines and the outdoor days
Cabrillo National Monument charges $20 per private vehicle for seven days, and "individuals 15 years old and younger are admitted free" on foot or by bike (as of October 2026, source: National Park Service).
Torrey Pines is the one fee that moves. California State Parks prices North Beach vehicle day use on demand, from a "$10.00" minimum to a "$25.00" maximum (as of October 2026, source: California State Parks). The reserve itself is shut. Beginning September 22, 2026 it is "closed to all visitors, including pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles" (as of October 2026, source: California State Parks). The closure covers all trails, the Beach Trail Staircase, the Lodge and both upper parking lots, so plan the outdoor day around Cabrillo until it reopens.
USS Midway and Balboa Park on a non-beach day
The USS Midway Museum is $39 for an adult and $29 for a youth bought online, which is $2 under the door price (as of October 2026, source: USS Midway Museum). Admission is free for "children 3 years old and younger". Two adults and two children in the youth band pay $136, and the ticket includes a self-guided audio tour.
Balboa Park is the other half of a non-beach day, and its gardens and plazas carry no admission. Non-resident parking in the El Prado core lots is $16 for a full day, and meters run $2.50 an hour to a $10 daily cap (as of October 2026, source: Forever Balboa Park, which publishes the rates the City of San Diego sets). The Zoo sits inside the park but charges its own $16.

Where to base yourself
Base a family with young children in Mission Bay or Mission Beach, the only area where flat water, surf and a boardwalk sit inside one walk. La Jolla is the upgrade and prices like one, averaging $348 a night against the $331 citywide figure (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Downtown earns its place only if the Midway and the trolley are the plan, and Carlsbad only if LEGOLAND is.
Lodging tax is the line most budgets miss. San Diego has run three transient occupancy tax zones since May 2025, and they charge 11.75%, 12.75% or 13.75% by zone (as of October 2026, source: City of San Diego). A separate 2% assessment applies only to lodging businesses with 70 or more rooms, so it does not reach a vacation rental.
Vacation rental or hotel in San Diego
Book a vacation rental if you need two bedrooms and a kitchen for more than two nights, and a hotel if the stay is shorter or the area is Mission Beach. The City of San Diego caps whole-home rentals at 1% of the city's housing stock outside the Mission Beach Community Planning Area, and at 30% inside it (as of September 2026, source: City of San Diego). The register shows 807 whole-home licenses left citywide and none at all in Mission Beach, where 1,099 are issued and applications are closed.
A licensed whole-home rental carries a "guest two-night minimum stay required", so a one-night stop is a hotel question. Because lodging tax applies to both, compare the after-tax nightly figure plus any cleaning fee against the $331 hotel average on the same dates.
Getting around without wasting the day
Rent a car, and use San Diego MTS for the downtown, Old Town and Balboa Park days only. An adult one-way fare is $3 on the bus, the trolley and Rapid (as of October 2026, source: San Diego MTS). A PRONTO account caps a day's spending at the $7 Day Pass value.
"Youth 18 and Under Ride Free" with a Youth PRONTO account, under a SANDAG and County of San Diego pilot running "through June 30, 2027" (as of October 2026, source: San Diego MTS). So two adults with two children pay $6 each way and nothing for the kids.
MTS does not reach La Jolla Shores, Torrey Pines or LEGOLAND on a schedule a family would accept, which is why the rental car stays in the cost row at $40 a day (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).
What a San Diego family trip costs
Two adults and two children about 6 and 10, five days and four nights on the ground with airfare excluded, come to $1,776 before food, parking and any attraction beyond one zoo day.
| Basket | Room, 4 nights | Rental car, 4 days | One zoo day, 4 people | On-the-ground subtotal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 adults and 2 children about 6 and 10, 5 days and 4 nights, airfare excluded | $1,324 | $160 | $292 | $1,776 |
Sources: KAYAK citywide hotel and rental-car averages for September 2026, carried by our San Diego against San Francisco comparison, and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance 1-Day Pass prices read in October 2026. Food, parking, LEGOLAND and SeaWorld are excluded.
Shift that same trip into October and the zoo day falls to $156, which takes the subtotal to $1,640. So is San Diego expensive to visit? On this basket it is a mid-priced American city whose most expensive line is the room, not the tickets.
Everything this row leaves out sits in our San Diego family vacation cost guide: food, neighborhood hotel bands and the other attractions.
Planning the days
Give each paid anchor its own day, and put the beach the day after the longest drive.
- Day 1: park once in the Zoo lot for $16 and walk into Balboa Park.
- Day 2: Mission Bay and the Mission Beach boardwalk, the easy day before the drive.
- Day 3: LEGOLAND California, 33 miles north, a full day with the car.
- Day 4: Downtown and the USS Midway, reached on the trolley.
- Day 5: Cabrillo National Monument and the tide pools on the way out, since Torrey Pines is closed to all visitors from September 22, 2026.
The LEGOLAND day is the only one that cannot absorb a late start; the beach day can. Our San Diego 4-day itinerary turns this into a plan with times.
What to pack
Pack layers for the evening rather than rain gear for the day. The normal October low is 61.5 F against a 74.6 F high (as of October 2026, source: NOAA).
Four items earn their space. Rash guards, because the water stays cool when the air does not. Closed-toe shoes that can get wet, for the Cabrillo tide pools. A sun hat for Mission Bay, where there is no shade. And your own stroller, because the Zoo rents singles at $16 and doubles at $20 and runs out on busy mornings.
Our take
Bring children to San Diego in October, give it five days, and base in Mission Bay. Buy the zoo tickets for a date inside that month: the same family-of-four zoo day costs $156 rather than $292, and the normal high is still 74.6 F.
The case for October is not a shoulder-season discount, because the room rate barely gives one. It is a free-admission rule for youths 11 and under, up to six per ticketed adult. Against a $1,776 basket, that one choice beats any booking tactic on the room.
The runners-up each have a condition. September is the second-warmest-air month, a tenth of a degree behind August, at a 77.2 F normal high and almost no rain, but every ticket is full price. July works only if the school calendar forces it, and then the room average is $423 rather than $331. Our Orlando against San Diego comparison settles the theme-park question, and our roundup of family friendly vacation spots puts San Diego in a wider field. Start with the Family Budget Calculator once the month is fixed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, for children roughly 2 to 15, and best over five days. The city patrols beaches that cost nothing to enter from nine permanent lifeguard stations, and the San Diego Zoo, LEGOLAND California and Balboa Park each take a full day. A family whose youngest is under 2, or who has only three days, gets less out of the trip than the room rate suggests, because the paid anchors sit 33 miles apart at the extremes.
The honest answer is an area rather than a property list: Mission Bay and Mission Beach are the only places where calm water, surf and a boardwalk sit within one walk of the room. The citywide hotel average is $331 a night against $348 in La Jolla (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). We do not rank individual resorts on this page, because no rate card we can read prices them all for the same party on the same dates.
October. The normal high is 74.6 F against 75.3 F in July, and normal October rainfall is half an inch (as of October 2026, source: NOAA). October is also the month that makes the zoo free for children: youths 11 and under enter the San Diego Zoo free with a ticketed adult, up to six youths per adult (as of October 2026, source: San Diego Zoo).
Day one park once in the Zoo lot for $16 and walk into Balboa Park, day two Mission Bay and the beach, day three downtown and the USS Midway on the trolley. Leave LEGOLAND California out of a three-day trip: at 33 miles north of downtown it costs the whole day. Our San Diego 4-day itinerary adds it as a standalone day.
Five that anchor a trip: the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park's gardens and museums, LEGOLAND California, the USS Midway Museum and Mission Bay Park's calm water. Five more that fill the gaps: the Mission Beach boardwalk, La Jolla Shores, the Cabrillo National Monument tide pools, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and the Children's Pool seal beach in La Jolla. The Children's Pool is "closed to public access during harbor seal pupping season, Dec. 15 through May 15, yearly" (as of October 2026, source: City of San Diego). Four of those ten carry no admission at all: the Mission Beach boardwalk, the Children's Pool, La Jolla Shores and Mission Bay Park.
Three nights at the city's $331 average is $993 for the room (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Add $120 for three days of a rental car and $292 for one San Diego Zoo day for four, and a family of four is at $1,405 on the ground with airfare excluded. Our San Diego family vacation cost guide carries the full breakdown by category, including food and the attractions this page leaves out.

How we checked these figures
Each operator page was fetched over HTTPS on 2026-10-06 and returned HTTP 200 with no redirect, and every price quoted above appears verbatim on the page named beside it. The basket is fixed for the whole article: two adults, two children aged roughly 6 and 10, five days and four nights on the ground, airfare excluded. Zoo child pricing is the 3 to 11 band; LEGOLAND child pricing is the 2 to 12 band; USS Midway youth pricing is the 4 to 12 band; the three are not interchangeable.
Three things we could not obtain. The citywide Kids Free page at sandiego.org returned a bot interstitial on two attempts, so every statement about free October admission is scoped to the San Diego Zoo's own page and this article makes no claim about other attractions. KAYAK's monthly average tables were not readable on either of two routes, so the $331, $348, $275, $423 and $40 figures are carried from our San Diego against San Francisco comparison on its own September 2026 basis and stamped as such; they are averages for a band, never a quoted price. No per-lot fee schedule for Mission Beach or La Jolla Shores was published at the City of San Diego URLs we tried, so no claim here depends on one.
Short-term rental license counts are the City of San Diego register as published for September 25, 2026: 8,432 licenses in total, of which 4,854 are Tier 3 with 807 whole-home licenses remaining, and 1,099 are Tier 4 in Mission Beach with none remaining and applications closed.
Prices and license counts change without notice. Figures are as of October 2026 except the room, rental-car and license counts, which are as of September 2026.
