San Diego vs San Francisco for Families: Kids' Ages Decide

Quick answer: San Diego vs San Francisco for families

  • San Francisco is cheaper for a family of four: a double room averages $303 a night against $331 in San Diego, and only San Diego needs a rental car (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). San Diego still wins for kids under 10.
  • Airfares depend on where you start, so price your own route into both cities; we leave them out of our totals.
  • San Diego's normal July high is 75°F; downtown San Francisco's is 66°F (as of September 2026, source: NOAA).
  • For swimming, pick San Diego: La Jolla Shores usually has the city's gentlest summer waves, while San Francisco's Ocean Beach water is "frigid" (as of September 2026, sources: City of San Diego, National Park Service).
  • Kids 18 and under ride Muni and San Diego's MTS free (MTS needs a Youth PRONTO card or app), but cable cars cost $9 over age 4 (as of September 2026, sources: SFMTA, San Diego MTS).
  • Skip this comparison if you've already picked San Diego: our San Diego family guide maps the zoo, beaches and neighborhoods by age.
  • Below: how far apart the two cities are, the month when San Francisco rooms drop to $214 a night, and the month that costs the most in each city.

The costly mistake is letting the cheaper room pick the city when your youngest wants a beach to swim at. Downtown San Francisco's normal July high is 66°F with a low of 54°F, against 75°F in San Diego (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). The side-by-side table prices both weeks.

Which is cheaper, San Diego or San Francisco?

San Francisco is the cheaper city for a family week, which catches most parents out. A double room averages $303 a night in San Francisco against $331 in San Diego (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). That is $2,121 against $2,317 for seven nights, so the room line alone favors San Francisco by $196.

Then comes the honest qualifier. You need a rental car in San Diego and can skip one in San Francisco, and a San Diego rental averages $40 a day (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). That is another $280 on the week, so the car widens the gap. Airfares depend on where you start, so check your own route.

Sources: KAYAK (average double-room price and San Diego rental-car average), San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and National Park Service, read September 2026. Airfares, food, parking and hotel taxes excluded. Room averages are market prices, not quotes.

Run the Real-Cost Test, which means adding the lines you will actually pay: the room, the car and one big day. In October the zoo day drops to $156, because kids 11 and under enter free with a paying adult (as of September 2026, source: San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance). San Diego still stays the pricier week, because the room and the car carry the gap.

Compare the same class of hotel before you book. Open San Diego hotel rates on Expedia and San Francisco hotel rates on Expedia, keep each hotel's own site in a second tab, and book the cheaper one. On a budget, San Francisco is the call.

When are San Francisco hotels cheapest?

December is San Francisco's cheapest month for rooms, at an average of $214 a night. San Diego's cheapest month is January, at $275 (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).

Cheapest week for four, 7 nights$1,925$1,498

Source: KAYAK city hotel pages, read September 2026. Double-room averages, before taxes and fees.

There's a catch. San Francisco's warmest month is September, at 70°F, against about 66°F in June and July (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). Its cheapest month is December, when the city is cold and wet. Apply the Shoulder-Season Lens, which asks whether a city's warm weeks and its cheap weeks land in the same months. In San Francisco they don't.

So with kids 10 or older, travel late in the year and take San Francisco. With kids under 10 who want a swim, pay San Diego's rate and book September or October.

Which month costs the most in each city?

July costs the most in San Diego, at an average of $423 a night, and March costs the most in San Francisco, at $408 (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). So the two cities peak in different seasons, and only one of them peaks in the school holidays.

The California Academy of Sciences also charges peak prices "during spring break, summer months, holiday weekends", so a family of four pays $200 instead of $176 (as of September 2026, source: California Academy of Sciences).

The fix is the calendar. A March break points to San Diego, and a July break points to San Francisco, because neither city is at its peak in the other's high month.

How cold is San Francisco in summer?

San Francisco is cool in summer: downtown's normal July high is 66°F and its low 54°F, against a 75°F high in San Diego (as of September 2026, source: NOAA, 1991 to 2020 normals). The coast is cooler still. The National Park Service says Ocean Beach "is almost always covered in fog throughout late spring and summer, with average temperatures in the 50s".

Sunshine is closer than its reputation. San Diego averages 146 clear and 102 cloudy days a year, and San Francisco's airport averages 160 clear and 105 cloudy days. San Diego's grayest months are May and June, with 8 and 9 clear days (as of September 2026, source: Western Regional Climate Center).

So pack fleeces for San Francisco in any month, and expect gray mornings in San Diego in May and June.

Which city has better beaches for kids?

San Diego has the better beaches for kids, because you can swim at them. At La Jolla Shores, the city says, "In summer, waves at this beach are usually the most gentle of all San Diego beaches," and it is one of nine beaches with permanent lifeguard stations (as of September 2026, source: City of San Diego Lifeguard Services).

San Francisco's beaches are for walking and kites, not swimming. At Ocean Beach, the National Park Service warns that "the water is frigid and the currents hazardous for all but the most experienced surfers". At Baker Beach, the Presidio Trust says "the water is chilly and the currents and riptides can be powerful, even for experienced swimmers" (as of September 2026, sources: National Park Service, Presidio Trust).

If a swim is on your kids' list, book San Diego.

Is San Diego Zoo or Monterey Bay Aquarium better for kids?

The San Diego Zoo is the better day for most kids, because it's a full day with rides included. A family of four pays $292 for one-day passes (as of September 2026, source: San Diego Zoo). Adults are $78 and children 3 to 11 are $68, with the Guided Bus Tour and Skyfari Aerial Tram included. In October kids 11 and under enter free with a paying adult, so the day costs $156 (as of September 2026, source: San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance).

The Monterey Bay Aquarium suits ocean-loving kids, but it's a day trip: about 114 miles from Union Square, roughly 2 hours 25 minutes each way (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing). A family of four pays $230 (as of September 2026, source: Monterey Bay Aquarium).

In the city, the California Academy of Sciences is $176 for four off-peak and the Exploratorium has more than 650 all-ages exhibits (as of September 2026, sources: California Academy of Sciences, Exploratorium). With kids under 8, pick the zoo; with a marine-mad 10-year-old, make the Monterey day.

Do you need a car in San Diego or San Francisco?

You need a car in San Diego and can skip one in San Francisco, because LEGOLAND California sits about 33 miles north of downtown (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing). Youth 18 and under still ride MTS free with a Youth PRONTO card or app (as of September 2026, source: San Diego MTS).

San Francisco has BART, Muni buses and streetcars, and the cable cars. Youth 18 and under ride Muni free, though not the cable car, which costs $9 a ride with kids 4 and under free (as of September 2026, source: SFMTA). One ride for four is $36, so make it a treat. Families base themselves in Fisherman's Wharf for the Alcatraz ferry, Union Square for the most Muni and BART lines, or the Marina for quieter streets and bridge views. In San Diego, rent the car; in San Francisco, spend that money on the ferry.

Should families book a hotel or a vacation rental in San Diego?

For a week at the beach, a licensed whole-home vacation rental beats a hotel room in San Diego for the kitchen and space; for a short stay near the zoo, book the hotel. Every short-term rental in the City of San Diego needs a Short-Term Residential Occupancy (STRO) license, and whole-home licenses are capped at 1% of housing units outside Mission Beach and 30% in Mission Beach (as of September 2026, source: City of San Diego).

San Diego has three family base areas. Mission Bay is the calm-water beach with the boardwalk, La Jolla has the tide pools and the gentlest summer waves, and the Gaslamp Quarter sits downtown, about 3 miles from the zoo. La Jolla is the neighborhood KAYAK users search most, at an average of $348 a night against $331 for the whole city (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Our San Diego family guide sorts those areas by your kids' ages.

Mission Beach's cap is full: as of September 25, 2026 it had 1,099 whole-home licenses and none left, and both hotels and rentals charge the city's transient occupancy tax of 11.75% to 13.75% by zone (as of September 2026, source: City of San Diego). Ask the host for the license number before you pay. For five nights or more at the beach, take a licensed rental under the city's $331 average room rate; for two or three nights near the zoo, take the hotel.

When does San Diego win for families?

San Diego wins for kids under 10 and a trip built around beaches and animals. Apply the Skip-If Filter, which means listing the things that would spoil the trip and then ruling out the city that causes them, and these conditions point to San Diego:

Our San Diego with kids guide matches each beach to your kids' ages. If two conditions fit, book San Diego.

When does San Francisco win for families?

San Francisco wins for kids 10 and up who want history, science and a real city, and for families who'd rather not drive.

Alcatraz needs a ferry ticket from Pier 33, and some tours are marked "Likely to Sell out" (as of September 2026, sources: National Park Service, Alcatraz City Cruises). If two of those conditions fit, book the ferry first.

How far is San Diego from San Francisco?

San Diego is about 500 miles from San Francisco by road, about 9 hours 25 minutes of driving with no traffic (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing). Nonstop flights take under 2 hours: Southwest's own schedule lists San Diego to San Francisco nonstops at 1 hour 30 minutes (as of September 2026, source: Southwest Airlines).

You can combine both cities in one trip. The coast road through Big Sur is about 560 miles, or 11 hours 42 minutes of driving before stops (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing). Highway 1 is open through Big Sur, but winter storms closed the Regent's Slide stretch again in February 2026, so check Caltrans QuickMap first (as of September 2026, source: Caltrans).

There is no through train. Amtrak's Pacific Surfliner runs north from San Diego but stops at San Luis Obispo, a 351-mile route of about 9 hours. The Coast Starlight serves only the "San Francisco area" from Los Angeles, and Amtrak lists its own San Francisco stop as a curbside bus stop (as of September 2026, source: Amtrak). So the train means a change in Los Angeles and a bus at the end.

With kids under 8, fly between the cities. With older kids and three days to spare, drive the coast; our family road trip planning guide covers stops and car-seat breaks.

What does each city give up?

San Diego gives up the city and adds a rental car, at about $280 a week. San Francisco gives up the warm beach and the swim.

If a cold beach would ruin the trip, book San Diego. If your teens would be bored by the third beach day, book San Francisco and keep the car money.

Our take

San Diego is the better California city for most families with kids under 10, for the zoo, LEGOLAND and beaches you can swim at, and a July high 9°F warmer (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). San Francisco is the better choice for kids 10 and up who want Alcatraz, museums and a city without a car.

What changed our mind on price is the market. Rooms average $303 a night in San Francisco against $331 in San Diego, and San Diego adds a rental car at about $40 a day (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). San Francisco is the cheaper week on our basket, by $614, so San Diego's premium buys the weather and the beach. That is a fair trade with young kids, and a poor one with teenagers.

Before you book, run your dates in the Budget Calculator, then run them again for the other city. If you pick San Diego, our San Diego 4-day itinerary lays out the zoo, La Jolla and Coronado.

Data Sources and Verification

In September 2026 we priced a hotel week and a rental car for a family of four in both cities from KAYAK's market averages, then read each attraction's own ticket page, both transit agencies' fare pages, an airline schedule, Amtrak's route pages, NOAA climate normals, city beach and rental rules, and OpenStreetMap drive times.

How we checked these figures

All figures were read in September 2026. Basket: two adults and two children, ages about 6 and 10, seven hotel nights. Hotel weeks are seven nights at each city's average double-room price on KAYAK's own city hotel page ($331 a night in San Diego, $303 in San Francisco), with the cheapest and priciest months taken from the same pages. Those are market averages across the whole hotel stock, not quotes for a named property, and they exclude taxes and fees. The rental-car line is seven days at KAYAK's stated San Diego average of $40 a day; San Francisco carries no car line, because the city's Muni, BART and cable car network covers a family week. Airfares are left out of every total, because the fare you pay depends on where you start, not on which city you visit. Headline days use each attraction's own adult and child prices for ages 6 and 10: the San Diego Zoo 1-Day Pass (outside October; in October kids 11 and under enter free, so only the two adult tickets count), the Alcatraz day tour from the National Park Service fee table, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium and California Academy of Sciences ticket pages. Flight times are Southwest's published nonstop schedule for San Diego to San Francisco. Train options come from Amtrak's own route and station pages. Temperatures are NOAA 1991 to 2020 monthly normals for San Diego Lindbergh Field and downtown San Francisco; clear and cloudy days are the Western Regional Climate Center's long-term averages for San Diego and San Francisco International Airport, as it has no city row for San Francisco. Drive times are OpenStreetMap routing (OSRM) estimates with no traffic, from downtown San Diego and Union Square. The Exploratorium's and LEGOLAND's ticket prices were not printed, because their pages showed only a booking widget or dated offers.

Room averages, rental-car rates and ticket prices were read in September 2026 and will change. Hotel prices move daily and by season.
