Tenerife vs Lanzarote for Families: The Month Decides It
AEMET's month by month normals, two Post Office week baskets for a family of four, gate prices by child age, and the waterpark calendar.

Quick answer: Tenerife vs Lanzarote for families
- For a family of four travelling October to March, Tenerife is the pick over Lanzarote, because Tenerife South holds the warmer winter days: 22.8°C against 21.8°C in December (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). Lanzarote takes April to September.
- Tenerife suits children aged 7 and over, because Siam Park and Loro Parque are both on the island. Lanzarote suits children aged 3 to 6, who enter its CACT centres free while Siam Park charges them €32 each (as of September 2026, sources: Siam Park, CACT Lanzarote).
- Lanzarote costs less on the ground. Two Post Office baskets for a family of four come to £385.09 against £429.16 in Tenerife, a gap of £44.07 that the water park line more than accounts for (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money).
- Both islands are 4 hours 30 mins from Manchester, and both keep GMT in winter (as of September 2026, source: Manchester Airport).
- Skip this comparison if your family wants a headline theme park holiday: read our Florida vs Canary Islands comparison instead, or our Canary Islands family guide if you are still choosing among all four islands.
- Below: the April crossover at 23.5°C, and which waterpark is open when you travel.
Lanzarote is often called the hotter of the two islands, flat out. AEMET's own normals say that depends on the month: Tenerife South's mean daily maximum is 22.8°C in December against 21.8°C at Lanzarote Airport, a gap of 1.0°C (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). Our month by month table prints all twelve months, and the Budget Calculator prices your own dates.
Tenerife vs Lanzarote for families, side by side
Tenerife is the warmer winter island with the bigger waterpark. Lanzarote is the cheaper week on the ground, and the easier one with children aged 3 to 6.

Which is nicer, Lanzarote or Tenerife?
Neither island is nicer across the board, and the honest answer is that the month and your children's ages decide it. Tenerife South is the warmer half of the year from October to March, and Lanzarote is warmer from April to September (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). Over a full year the two airports record the same 24.8°C mean daily maximum.
The islands differ in what they do with the weather. Tenerife puts a big waterpark, a big animal park and Spain's highest mountain within a short drive of the southern resorts, and Mount Teide reaches 3,715 m (as of September 2026, source: MITECO). Lanzarote puts César Manrique's volcanic centres at the top of the list, with Timanfaya, Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua run by CACT Lanzarote.
Is Lanzarote hotter than Tenerife?
Lanzarote is hotter than Tenerife South from April to September, and cooler from October to March. December and January are the widest winter gaps at 1.0°C, and June is the widest summer gap at 0.9°C (as of September 2026, source: AEMET, 1981 to 2010 normals).
| Mean daily maximum, degrees C | Tenerife Sur Airport | Lanzarote Airport | Warmer |
|---|---|---|---|
| October | 26.8 | 26.7 | Tenerife |
| November | 24.8 | 24.2 | Tenerife |
| December | 22.8 | 21.8 | Tenerife |
| January | 21.7 | 20.7 | Tenerife |
| February | 22.0 | 21.3 | Tenerife |
| March | 23.1 | 22.9 | Tenerife |

The April crossover
April is where the two islands swap places. Lanzarote reads 23.5°C against 23.1°C at Tenerife South, and it stays ahead every month to September (as of September 2026, source: AEMET).
Winter sunshine hours run the other way round from the temperatures. Lanzarote gets 203 hours in January against 193 at Tenerife South, but it also gets more rain days in December, at 3.8 against 3.5 (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). Our winter sun destinations guide scores Tenerife's 22.8°C December against the rest of the short haul map, and our February half term guide carries the half term pair at 22.0°C and 21.3°C.
Book October to March and take Tenerife. Book April to September and Lanzarote is the warmer island, by a margin small enough that it should not outrank a cheaper flight.
Is Lanzarote as cheap as Tenerife?
Lanzarote is cheaper than Tenerife, not level with it. The Post Office prices two family baskets in each resort island, and Lanzarote comes out £44.07 lower across both (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money).
| On the ground for a week, family of four | Tenerife | Lanzarote |
|---|---|---|
| Family Holiday Costs Barometer, basket of 10 tourist items | £158.31 | £147.42 |
| Children's Beach Barometer, six children's beach items | £270.85 | £237.67 |
| of which the water park visit, already counted in the row above | £146.79 | £87.37 |
| Total, both baskets | £429.16 | £385.09 |
| Tenerife costs more by | £44.07 |
Source: Post Office Travel Money Family Holiday Costs Barometer and Children's Beach Barometer, in the Family Holiday Report 2026 with TUI, at July 2026 exchange rates, read September 2026. On the ground spend only: flights and accommodation are excluded. The report names no resort.
Run the Real-Cost Test, which means pricing the lines you will actually pay rather than the headline. One line is the whole gap and more: a water park visit costs £146.79 in Tenerife against £87.37 in Lanzarote, a difference of £59.42 (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money). Take the water park day out of both baskets and Lanzarote becomes the dearer island, by about £15 a week. Our real week costs guide ranks both islands against ten other family destinations on the same baskets.
At the attraction gate, your children's ages decide which island is cheaper, and the answer flips twice.
| Headline attraction day at the gate, family of four | Tenerife: Siam Park | Lanzarote: Timanfaya, Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua | Cheaper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Two adults and two children aged 7 to 11 | €152 (£130.79) | €192 (£165.21) | Tenerife |
| Two adults and two children aged 3 to 6 | €152 (£130.79) | €128 (£110.14) | Lanzarote |
| Two adults and two children aged 0 to 2 | €88 (£75.72) | €128 (£110.14) | Tenerife |
Sources: Siam Park and CACT Lanzarote ticket pages, read September 2026. Siam Park: €44 from age 12, €32 for ages 3 to 11, free for 0 to 2. CACT: €30 adult at Montañas del Fuego and €17 at each of Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, half price for ages 7 to 12, free for 0 to 6. £ equivalents at the European Central Bank reference rate of €1 = £0.86045 on 25 September 2026.
With two children aged 7 to 11, Lanzarote's three Manrique centres cost €40 more than one Siam Park day. With two children aged 3 to 6 the same three centres cost €24 less, because CACT admits under 7s free while Siam Park charges from age 3.
Which waterpark is open when you travel?
Siam Park is open daily all year, and Aquapark Costa Teguise publishes a calendar that runs 29 March to 8 November. If you are travelling in the February half term, only one island has a big waterpark day on its published schedule.
Here is what each park publishes for itself (as of September 2026, sources: Siam Park, Aquapark Costa Teguise):
- Siam Park, 1 May to 29 October: open daily, 10:00 to 18:00.
- Siam Park, 30 October to 30 April: open daily, 10:00 to 17:00.
- Aquapark Costa Teguise, 29 March to 5 April: open every day.
- Aquapark Costa Teguise, 6 April to 31 May: Thursday to Monday, 10:00 to 17:00.
- Aquapark Costa Teguise, 1 June to 8 November: open every day, 10:00 to 17:00.
Aquapark Costa Teguise publishes no dates between 9 November and 28 March, so plan a winter week in Lanzarote around the volcanic centres instead.
That is the trap in a winter sun booking. Families pick Lanzarote for the price, then find the waterpark day they had pencilled in is not on the calendar. A Siam Park day for a family of four costs €152 at the gate with children aged 7 to 11 (as of September 2026, source: Siam Park). The park also calls itself the "N°1 Water Park in the World for the 10th consecutive year!", which is its own claim. It rests on the TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice awards it displays on its home page (as of September 2026, source: Siam Park).
Which island has better beaches for kids?
Lanzarote has the better beaches for small children, and Tenerife the better beaches for a resort week. The Papagayo coves near Playa Blanca are small, sandy and tucked into the coastline, which is the shape that works best with a toddler. They are also unserviced, so you carry everything in.
Tenerife's south west coast around Costa Adeje runs longer resort beaches with promenades, hire beds and cafés behind them, which suits older children who want to come and go. That is our editorial read of the two coasts rather than a measured ranking, and no official body scores Canary beaches for families.
If your youngest is under 5, the coves win. If your children are 8 and up and want to buy their own ice cream, the resort beaches win.
Where should families stay on each island?
In Tenerife, families concentrate in the south west: Costa Adeje for the newer resort hotels and the closest base to Siam Park, and Los Cristianos for a smaller town feel.
In Lanzarote, the three resort areas are Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca. Playa Blanca is the closest base to the Papagayo coves, and Costa Teguise is the one with the waterpark on its doorstep, inside the published season.
Both islands run all inclusive and self catering side by side. Our winter sun all inclusive guide weighs the board basis, and our Spain family holidays guide covers the wider picture. Our Tenerife vs Gran Canaria comparison takes the third island.
Which island feels busier?
Tenerife feels busier. It is the larger island, its southern resorts carry more hotels, restaurants and evening entertainment, and its headline attractions draw day visitors. Lanzarote's building rules keep resorts low rise, and its headline attractions are ticketed sites with timed entry rather than resort strips.
That shows up in how you book. CACT sells Montañas del Fuego by time slot, and asks you to arrive 15 minutes before the time on your ticket (as of September 2026, source: CACT Lanzarote).
This is our read of the pace rather than a measurement. If your family wants an evening strip and a wide choice of restaurants, that points to Tenerife.
When does Tenerife win for families?
Tenerife wins for children aged 7 to 12 and for any winter week. Apply the Skip-If Filter, which means listing what would spoil the trip and ruling out the island that causes it. These conditions point to Tenerife:
- Your children are 7 to 12: Siam Park and Loro Parque are both on the island, and a Siam Park day for four costs €152 at the gate with children aged 7 to 11 (as of September 2026, source: Siam Park).
- You travel between October and March: Tenerife South runs 0.1°C to 1.0°C warmer every one of those months (as of September 2026, source: AEMET).
- A waterpark day is non negotiable: Siam Park opens daily all year, at 10:00 to 17:00 through the winter (as of September 2026, source: Siam Park).
- Your teenagers want variety: the southern resorts carry the restaurants and the evening choice, and Mount Teide gives the island a day out that is not a beach.
If two of those fit, book Tenerife. Its winter warmth is also why it leads our winter sun destinations guide.
When does Lanzarote win for families?
Lanzarote wins for children aged 3 to 6, for a quieter week and for a summer trip.
- Your children are 3 to 6: they enter Montañas del Fuego, Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua free, so two adults and two children pay €128 for all three (as of September 2026, source: CACT Lanzarote). Siam Park charges €32 a child from age 3.
- You are watching the budget: two Post Office baskets come to £385.09 against £429.16 (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money).
- You travel between April and September: Lanzarote is the warmer island in all six months, by up to 0.9°C (as of September 2026, source: AEMET).
- You want short hops between sights: Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua sit just over a kilometre apart on the same coast road (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap road routing). CACT puts the two visits at about 50 and 60 minutes, so both fit one morning (as of September 2026, source: CACT Lanzarote).
One caveat with a pushchair. CACT says pushchairs are not allowed in Cueva de los Verdes, with no storage for them, and not permitted at Jameos del Agua, and it recommends a baby carrier at Montañas del Fuego (as of September 2026, source: CACT Lanzarote). Pack the carrier and those three days work with a toddler.
What does each island give up?
Tenerife gives up about £44.07 a week on the ground, and the free entry that makes Lanzarote cheap with children aged 3 to 6. Lanzarote gives up the warmer winter days, by up to 1.0°C, and a published waterpark season between 9 November and 28 March.
Run the Three-Question Decision Test before you book. What do your children's ages allow, once you know Siam Park charges from age 3 and CACT is free to 6? What is your real time budget, including the travel days? And what is your break point if the weather turns, which on these two islands means rain days rather than cold?
If a cold, wet fortnight would ruin the trip, the December rain days say Tenerife by a whisker, at 3.5 against 3.8. If the budget is the break point, Lanzarote is the island.
What parents say about both islands
Two comments from a Mumsnet thread on this exact question capture the split. In 2016, TeenAndTween wrote of Lanzarote: "Unlike Tenerife it does not have a gigantic volcano stuck in the middle that you have to drive around to get anywhere."
In the same thread, Dowser wrote: "I would say Tenerife more to do and less windy lol." We read the thread again in September 2026 and print no other quotes from it.
Our take
Tenerife is the better island for families who want a waterpark, resort entertainment and the warmest winter sun, and Lanzarote is the better island for a quieter week with volcanic landscapes and younger children.
The cost claim this page used to make no longer holds in both directions. Lanzarote's three headline centres cost €192 for a family with children aged 7 to 11, against €152 for a Siam Park day. So Lanzarote is the pricier gate day at that age, and the cheaper one at ages 3 to 6 (as of September 2026, sources: CACT Lanzarote, Siam Park). On the ground across a week, Lanzarote stays cheaper, by £44.07 (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money).
So decide by month first and by ages second. October to March with school age children points to Tenerife; April to September, or any week with children aged 3 to 6, points to Lanzarote. Run your own dates in our Budget Calculator, then run the other island and compare the two totals.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is nicer, Lanzarote or Tenerife?
Neither island is nicer across the board, so the month and your children's ages decide it. Tenerife is nicer from October to March, when Tenerife South runs 0.1°C to 1.0°C warmer, and it has the bigger waterpark and the higher mountain, with Teide at 3,715 m (as of September 2026, sources: AEMET, MITECO). Lanzarote is nicer from April to September, when it runs warmer, and its Manrique centres are calmer with small children.
Is Lanzarote hotter than Tenerife?
Lanzarote is hotter than Tenerife South from April to September and cooler from October to March. April splits them at 23.5°C in Lanzarote against 23.1°C at Tenerife South, and June is the widest summer gap at 26.3°C against 25.4°C (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). Both islands average the same 24.8°C mean daily maximum over the year.
What is the nicest Canary Island?
Between these two, Tenerife is the nicer winter island and Lanzarote the nicer summer one, on AEMET's month by month normals (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). The four island answer is not ours to give here. Our Canary Islands family guide ranks all four on warmth and cost.
Is Lanzarote as cheap as Tenerife?
Lanzarote is cheaper than Tenerife on the ground. Two Post Office baskets for a family of four come to £385.09 in Lanzarote against £429.16 in Tenerife, a gap of £44.07, and the water park visit inside them costs £87.37 against £146.79 (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money). At the attraction gate the answer flips with your children's ages, because the CACT centres admit under 7s free.
Why is Lanzarote on the no go list?
Lanzarote is not named on its own. Fodor's No List 2025, published on 13 November 2024, puts the Canary Islands inside an entry about European destinations after overtourism protests, and it quotes signs reading "The Canaries have a limit" (as of September 2026, source: Fodor's). The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office page for Spain, updated on 12 August 2026, carries no advice against travel (as of September 2026, source: FCDO).
What's the cheapest Canary Island to go to?
Of these two, Lanzarote is the cheaper island on the ground, at £385.09 against £429.16 for two Post Office baskets for a family of four (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money). The ranking across all four islands sits on our Canary Islands family guide.
What is the least popular Canary Island?
We do not rank the four islands by visitor numbers here, because this page prints no passenger counts. On these two, Manchester Airport puts both at 4 hours 30 minutes from Manchester (as of September 2026, source: Manchester Airport). Our Canary Islands family guide holds the four island picture.
What is the warmest Canary Island?
Between the pair, Tenerife South is the warmer island from October to March and Lanzarote from April to September. December reads 22.8°C at Tenerife South against 21.8°C in Lanzarote, and both islands average 24.8°C over the year (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). For the four island answer, read our Canary Islands family guide.
What's the most expensive Canary Island?
Of these two, Tenerife is the pricier island on the ground, by £44.07 across two Post Office baskets for a family of four (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money). At the attraction gate it turns on your children's ages. A €152 Siam Park day is cheaper than Lanzarote's three Manrique centres with children aged 7 to 11. It is dearer with children aged 3 to 6 (as of September 2026, sources: Siam Park, CACT Lanzarote). The four island ranking lives on our Canary Islands family guide.
Which is the nicest Canary Island for families?
Between these two, Tenerife suits families with children aged 7 and over, and Lanzarote suits families with children aged 3 to 6, who enter its CACT centres free while Siam Park charges from age 3 (as of September 2026, sources: Siam Park, CACT Lanzarote). Our Canary Islands family guide compares all four islands.
Is Lanzarote chavvy?
Lanzarote costs less on the ground than Tenerife, at £385.09 against £429.16 for two Post Office baskets (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money). The island's building rules are low rise, and its headline attractions are the César Manrique centres run by CACT Lanzarote, including Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes. Resorts differ more than islands do, so pick the resort, not the label.
Which is warmer, Tenerife or Lanzarote?
It swaps with the month: Tenerife South is warmer from October to March, by 1.0°C in December and January, and Lanzarote is warmer from April to September, by up to 0.9°C in June (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). Over the year both average a 24.8°C mean daily maximum.
Which is nicer, Tenerife or Lanzarote?
The same answer as the other way round: the month and your children's ages decide it, not the island. Take Tenerife from October to March, and Lanzarote from April to September or with children aged 3 to 6, free at its CACT centres (as of September 2026, sources: AEMET, CACT Lanzarote).
Which is better for families, Lanzarote or Tenerife?
Tenerife is better for children aged 7 and over, because Siam Park and Loro Parque are both on the island and a Siam Park day for a family of four costs €152 at the gate (as of September 2026, source: Siam Park). Lanzarote is better for children aged 3 to 6 and for a quieter week, because they enter the CACT centres free while Siam Park charges them from age 3 (as of September 2026, sources: CACT Lanzarote, Siam Park). Pushchairs are not allowed inside Cueva de los Verdes or Jameos del Agua, so pack a baby carrier.
Which Canary Island is nicest?
Across this pair, Tenerife is nicest in winter and Lanzarote in summer, on AEMET's normals for the two airports (as of September 2026, source: AEMET). Our Canary Islands family guide answers the four island version, scoring them on warmth, rain and cost.
Which part of Tenerife is best for kids?
The south west coast, around Costa Adeje, is where the family resorts are concentrated. Siam Park sits there, and the AEMET station that records the island's warmest winter figures is Tenerife South Airport, close to the same coast (as of September 2026, sources: Siam Park, AEMET). The north is greener and cooler, which suits walking more than beach days.
How much does a family holiday to Tenerife or Lanzarote cost?
On the ground, a family of four spends about £429.16 in Tenerife and £385.09 in Lanzarote across two Post Office baskets, which cover everyday tourist items and children's beach items at July 2026 exchange rates (as of September 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money). Flights and accommodation come on top, and both islands are 4 hours 30 minutes from Manchester (as of September 2026, source: Manchester Airport). One headline attraction day at the gate is €152 for Siam Park, against €192 for Lanzarote's three Manrique centres with two children aged 7 to 11 (as of September 2026, sources: Siam Park, CACT Lanzarote). Price your own dates in our Budget Calculator.
Is Tenerife or Lanzarote better for families?
Tenerife is better for families with children aged 7 and over, for Siam Park, Loro Parque and the warmer winter days, at 22.8°C in December against 21.8°C (as of September 2026, sources: Siam Park, AEMET). Lanzarote is better for families with children aged 3 to 6 and for anyone who wants a quieter week, because its CACT centres admit them free while Siam Park charges from age 3 (as of September 2026, sources: CACT Lanzarote, Siam Park). Travelling between April and September tips the warmth to Lanzarote.
How long is the flight from UK to Tenerife and Lanzarote?
Manchester Airport puts both at 4 hours 30 mins, to Tenerife South (TFS) and to Lanzarote (ACE) (as of September 2026, source: Manchester Airport). Both islands keep GMT in winter and GMT plus 1 hour in summer, so there is no jet lag for children. Times from other UK airports differ, so check your own.
Is Siam Park suitable for young children?
Yes, with one caveat about age and price. The park's own Lost City area has 15 water slides and it calls it "the only pool made for babies on the whole Canary Islands" (as of September 2026, source: Siam Park). Tickets are free for children aged 0 to 2, then €32 from age 3 to 11 and €44 from age 12 (as of September 2026, source: Siam Park). With a baby or a two year old, free at both, Tenerife is the cheaper gate day. From age 3 to 6 Siam Park charges and the CACT centres do not, so Lanzarote wins (as of September 2026, sources: Siam Park, CACT Lanzarote).
Is Lanzarote too windy for families?
Lanzarote can be windy, and AEMET's published normals for the two airports carry no wind column, so we print no wind figure. On the Mumsnet thread we read, one parent wrote in 2016, "I would say Tenerife more to do and less windy lol", which is one family's view rather than a measurement. Book a sheltered resort and check the forecast in the week before you fly.

How we checked these figures
All figures were read in September 2026. Temperatures, sunshine hours and rain days are AEMET's published climate normals for Tenerife Sur Aeropuerto and Lanzarote Aeropuerto, period 1981 to 2010; TM is the mean of daily maximum temperatures, and the "warmer" column is the arithmetic difference between the two station rows. Those are airport stations on each island's southern side, so they describe the main resort coasts rather than the whole island. The week figures are the Post Office Family Holiday Costs Barometer and Children's Beach Barometer for each island, added together; the report states its data relates to July 2026 exchange rates, and it names no resort, so we print none. Those baskets are on the ground spend only, with flights and accommodation excluded. Gate baskets are two adults and two children at each attraction's own published prices: Siam Park at €44 from age 12 and €32 for ages 3 to 11, and CACT Lanzarote at €30 for Montañas del Fuego and €17 each for Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua, half price for ages 7 to 12 and free for ages 0 to 6. Pound equivalents use the European Central Bank reference rate of €1 = £0.86045 published on 25 September 2026, and they move with the rate. Flight times are Manchester Airport's own destination pages and apply to Manchester only. We printed no Loro Parque ticket price, no package holiday price and no wind figure, because none of the three could be read at a fact owner: the Loro Parque ticket page blocked our requests, no operator publishes a like for like package for both islands, and AEMET's normals tables carry no wind column. CACT's own Montañas del Fuego page gives the included coach route as both a 35 minute route and a 40 minute route departing every 20 minutes, and it gives the visit duration two ways, as 90 minutes in its header block and as approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes in the visit text, so we print the figure from the visit text and no coach figure.
Gate prices, baskets and exchange rates were read in September 2026 and will change. Attraction calendars are published a season at a time.
