Crete vs Corfu for Families: Your Kids' Ages Decide It
A priced August week of Chania flights and car hire for a family of four, drive times from each base, and the age when Crete starts to win.

Quick answer: Crete vs Corfu for families
- For a family of four, Corfu beats Crete for children under 5 because its beaches are short drives; Crete wins from about 8, though a Chania-based August week of flights and car hire costs £698 more (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).
- Corfu's headline bay is closer: Paleokastritsa is about 35 minutes by road from Corfu Town, while Elafonisi is 80 to 105 minutes from Chania (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap).
- Corfu's east coast has still, shallow water, and you can reach it without a car: Dassia is 12 km from Corfu Town on the No. 7 city bus (as of September 2026, source: Visit Corfu).
- Crete stays warmer outside midsummer: October days averaged 24.7°C in Heraklion against 22.4°C in Corfu over 2016 to 2025 (as of September 2026, source: Open-Meteo).
- Skip both if you're still choosing a Greek island: our Greece family holidays guide compares Rhodes, Kos, Kefalonia and Zakynthos too.
- Below: the Crete base that turns Elafonisi into a drive of 3 hours 30 minutes or more each way, and the age when Crete starts to win.
The expensive mistake is booking Crete for its famous lagoons and then staying at the wrong end of the island. From Heraklion, Elafonisi is 3 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes each way by road (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap). The side-by-side table prices the week, and the Budget Calculator runs it for your own dates.
Crete vs Corfu for families, side by side
Corfu is the easier island for young children and the cheaper one to reach, and Crete gives older children more to do for a bigger bill. The table sets out the week the way a parent plans it: the flights, the car, the drives, the weather and the day out.

Sources: KAYAK (August average return fares, flight times, medium-car daily rates and the Heraklion to Corfu route page) and OpenStreetMap routing (drive-time ranges across two routers). Also Open-Meteo (average daily highs, 2016 to 2025), Watercity, Aqualand Corfu, NECCA and Visit Corfu, all read September 2026. Crete flights are London to Chania, and the £1,766 basket uses the typical Chania car rate. Basket: two adults and two children.

Is Corfu or Crete better for families?
Corfu is better for families with children under 5, and Crete is better once your youngest is about 8. The split comes from distance. On Corfu, Paleokastritsa is about 35 minutes from Corfu Town and Sidari 45 to 55 minutes (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap). On Crete, even a well-placed base puts the big lagoons more than an hour away. Chania to Balos is about 80 minutes, and Chania to Elafonisi is 80 to 105 minutes.
With a toddler who naps and a car seat that takes a while to buckle, those minutes are the holiday. Crete pays you back for the driving with more to do: Knossos is 5 to 15 minutes from Heraklion, and its full ticket is €20 per adult (as of September 2026, source: Hellenic Ministry of Culture). If your children are between 5 and 8, pick by the one who tires first on a long drive.
At what age does Crete beat Corfu?
Crete starts to beat Corfu at about 8, when a child can sit through a drive of about 90 minutes and still enjoy the beach at the end. That's roughly the trip from Chania to Elafonisi, at 80 to 105 minutes, or to Balos at about 80 minutes (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap). Below that age, Corfu's shorter hops win almost every day of the week.
The second threshold comes in the teens. The full Samaria Gorge walk is about 15 km and takes 6 to 7 hours, from Xyloskalo down to the village of Agia Roumeli (as of September 2026, source: NECCA). That's a day we'd save for teenagers who walk well. Younger children can still see the famous narrows called Portes: take the boat to Agia Roumeli and walk in from there. From the boat quay it's about 2 km to the park entrance and about 1.5 km more to the Portes, roughly 7 km there and back (as of September 2026, source: NECCA).
So here's the rule. If your youngest is under 5, book Corfu. If your youngest is 8 or older and your family likes a full day out, book Crete. Between those ages, count the long drives you'd really take. A toddler with a teenage sibling tips it to Crete, as long as you base in Chania so the toddler's longest drives stay near 90 minutes.
Which island costs more for a family of four?
Crete costs more to reach and to get around: four August flights from London and a week's hire car come to £1,766 for Crete against £1,068 for Corfu without a car (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). That's £698 more for Crete, or £306 more if you'd hire a car in Corfu too.
| Line item, family of four, August week | Crete | Corfu |
|---|---|---|
| Flights, 4 August return seats from London (£361 to Chania, £267 to Corfu) | £1,444 | £1,068 |
| Medium hire car, 7 days at KAYAK's typical daily rate, which is not an August rate (£46 a day in Chania, £56 in Corfu) | £322 | £0 (optional; £392 if you hire) |
| Total, flights and car | £1,766 | £1,068 (£1,460 with a car) |
| Crete from Chania costs more by | £698 | £306 if you also hire in Corfu |
Sources: KAYAK route pages (August average return fare per seat) and car hire pages ("Medium car hire … typically costs around"), read September 2026. The car rates are typical daily rates, not August rates. Hotels, meals and activities are not included.
Run the Real-Cost Test on that table and the flights do most of the work. KAYAK's August average return fare is £361 to Chania and £267 to Corfu (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). The car is the other line. Crete's daily rate is lower, £46 for a medium car in Chania against £56 in Corfu, but Crete needs one and Corfu doesn't. KAYAK gives a second medium-car figure on the same pages, an "on average" rate of £26 a day in Chania and £38 in Corfu (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Price the Chania car at that lower rate and the gap drops to £558.
Eating out narrows the gap slightly. A mid-range meal for two costs £42.98 in Chania and £47.28 in Corfu (as of September 2026, source: Numbeo). Two meals for two feed a family of four, so seven nights of those dinners cost about £60 more in Corfu. Hotels aren't in the table, because the price depends on the resort and the board you pick. Price the room last. If your hotel quotes come in close, Corfu is the cheaper holiday.
Which part of Crete should families base in?
Base in Chania if Crete's lagoon beaches are the reason you're going. Elafonisi is 80 to 105 minutes from Chania (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap). From Heraklion the same beach is 3 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes away. Base near Heraklion if Knossos and Watercity are the plan.
| From | To | Road distance | Drive time, each way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chania | Elafonisi | 72 km | 80 to 105 minutes |
| Chania | Balos car park | 52 km | about 80 minutes |
| Chania | Knossos | 153 km | 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes |
| Heraklion | Elafonisi | 220 km | 3 hours 30 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes |
| Heraklion | Balos car park | 199 km | 3 hours 5 minutes to 3 hours 50 minutes |
| Heraklion | Knossos | 6 km | 5 to 15 minutes |
Source: OpenStreetMap routing, town centre to beach car park or site, read September 2026. Each time is a rounded range across two routers on OpenStreetMap data, OSRM and Valhalla, so treat it as a map estimate. Real drives with stops take longer.
That's the trap. A Heraklion resort and a day at Elafonisi means about seven hours in the car, there and back, before anyone gets wet. From Chania the same beach is about three hours round trip. The island is long, too: Kissamos to Sitia is about 305 km by road, or 4 hours to 5 hours 15 minutes (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap).
So pick one end and stay there. If you want the western lagoons, fly to Chania and book there. If Knossos matters more, stay near Heraklion and treat Elafonisi as a skip. Our Crete family holidays guide ranks the resorts in each region.
Price the same class of hotel in your chosen base before you book. Check Chania hotel rates on Expedia or Corfu hotel rates on Expedia, open the hotel's own website in a second tab, and book whichever tab is cheaper.
Which island has the better beaches for young children?
Corfu's east coast has the better everyday beaches for young children, because the water is still and shallow close to the resorts. Visit Corfu says the east coast beaches, "protected by the mainland shore-line", are "ideal for swimming due to their still waters", and that the north-east has "sandy beaches with shallow waters" (as of September 2026, source: Visit Corfu). Corfu has both sand and pebbles: Visit Corfu describes Dassia, 12 km from Corfu Town, as "a long strip of sand and fine pebbles, with shallow waters" (as of September 2026, source: Visit Corfu).
Crete's two famous lagoons are shallow as well, but they're a day out, not a daily swim. The Region of Crete lists Elafonisi as shallow white sand with a lifeguard and no natural shade (as of September 2026, source: Region of Crete). Balos is shallow too, with no lifeguard, no restaurants and no natural shade listed, though it does list umbrellas and sunbeds.
For a toddler's daily paddle, pick Corfu's east coast. If you go to Balos with small children, take water and lunch, because the Region of Crete lists no restaurants there.
Which island is warmer in spring and autumn?
Crete is warmer in spring and autumn, by about 2 to 3°C. Over 2016 to 2025, the average October high was 24.7°C in Heraklion against 22.4°C in Corfu (as of September 2026, source: Open-Meteo). In August the two islands are level, and the table sets out the other months families ask about.
| Average daily high, 2016 to 2025 | Heraklion, Crete | Corfu |
|---|---|---|
| April | 21.4°C | 18.7°C |
| May | 25.1°C | 22.3°C |
| August | 30.9°C | 31.3°C |
Source: Open-Meteo ERA5 reanalysis, average daily maximum for each calendar month over 2016 to 2025, read September 2026.
That matters for the October half-term. Corfu's Aqualand closes for the season on 4 October in 2026 (as of September 2026, source: Aqualand Corfu), so a Corfu half-term is a beach-and-town week. Crete's Watercity gives no firm closing date and says it runs from early May until October depending on the weather, so check its announcements before you count on a waterpark day there either (as of September 2026, source: Watercity). If you're booking the October half-term and the kids want warm swims, pick Crete.
How far is Crete from Corfu?
Crete and Corfu are about 412 miles (about 663 km) apart by air, measured from Heraklion to Corfu, so they sit at opposite ends of Greece rather than near each other. No direct flight links them: KAYAK lists direct flights as "Not available" and puts every connecting flight through Athens (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Fares via Athens average £237 return, and the quickest recent one-way deal on that connection is 4h 30m.
That rules out a two-island week for most families. You'd lose a travel day and pay for four more seats. Pick one island for a week, and save the other for next year.
When Corfu wins
Corfu wins for families with toddlers, families who don't want to drive and families flying on a short budget. Apply the Skip-If Filter to Crete, and these are the conditions that point to Corfu:
- Your youngest is under 5: Glyfada, Paleokastritsa and Sidari are 20 minutes to 55 minutes from Corfu Town (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap).
- You'd rather not drive: the No. 7 city bus runs to Dassia (as of September 2026, source: Visit Corfu).
- You want the shorter flight: London to Corfu averages 3h 16m against 4h 03m to Chania (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).
- Flights are the budget: August fares average £267 return against £361 to Chania (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).
If two of those fit, book Corfu.
When Crete wins
Crete wins for families with children of about 8 and up, a half-term in October or a list of day trips. These are the conditions that point to Crete:
- Your children can manage the long drives: Chania to Elafonisi is 80 to 105 minutes each way (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap).
- History is on the list: Knossos charges €20 for a full adult ticket (as of September 2026, source: Hellenic Ministry of Culture).
- A waterpark day matters: Watercity's full-access ticket is €32.50, against €45 for an adult at Aqualand Corfu's ticket office (as of September 2026, sources: Watercity, Aqualand Corfu).
- You're travelling in October: Heraklion's average October high is 24.7°C against 22.4°C in Corfu (as of September 2026, source: Open-Meteo).
If your youngest is 8 or older and two of those fit, book Crete.
What does each island give up?
Corfu gives up the big days out that make Crete worth the drive: Knossos, the lagoons and the gorge. Its Aqualand also shuts on 4 October. Crete gives up ease: your holiday runs on a hire car, and its lagoon beaches sit more than an hour from both Chania and Heraklion.
So choose which cost your family minds more. If long car days end in tears, give up the lagoons and take Corfu. If a week at one resort would bore your kids by Wednesday, give up the short drives and take Crete, based at the right end.
Our take
Corfu is the better island for a family of four with children under 5, and Crete wins once your youngest is about 8, because its best days need a car. Four August flights and a week's car cost £1,766 for Crete against £1,068 for a car-free Corfu week (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).
The reasoning comes down to distance and age. Corfu keeps beach days short, and its east coast has the still, shallow water toddlers need. Crete asks for more driving, but it pays that back with Knossos, the lagoons and the gorge for older children. The crossover sits at about 8, or earlier for a child who travels well.
Before you book, price your week on one island and then the other in the Budget Calculator. If you choose Crete, our Crete with kids guide helps you pick the resort.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far is Crete from Corfu?
Crete and Corfu are about 412 miles (about 663 km) apart by air, from Heraklion to Corfu, so they sit at opposite ends of Greece rather than near each other. No direct flight links them: KAYAK lists direct flights as "Not available" and puts every connecting flight through Athens (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Where is nicer, Corfu or Crete?
For a family with young children, Corfu is nicer to be on day to day, and for older children Crete has more to see. Visit Corfu describes the east coast beaches as "ideal for swimming due to their still waters" (as of September 2026, source: Visit Corfu). Crete has the bigger days out, such as Knossos and the shallow white-sand beach at Elafonisi (as of September 2026, sources: Hellenic Ministry of Culture, Region of Crete).
What is the nicest Greek island to go to?
There's no official ranking of Greek islands, so the nicest one depends on your children's ages. Between these two, pick Corfu for children under 5 and Crete from about 8. Our Greece family holidays guide compares Rhodes, Kos, Kefalonia and Zakynthos as well.
Is Corfu more expensive than Crete?
Corfu is cheaper to fly to and you don't need a car there, but its daily car hire and its meals cost more than Crete's. Four return seats from London at KAYAK's August average come to £1,068 for Corfu and £1,444 for Chania, and Crete needs a hire car on top (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). A medium car typically costs £56 a day in Corfu against £46 in Chania (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). A mid-range meal for two is £47.28 in Corfu against £42.98 in Chania (as of September 2026, source: Numbeo).
Is Crete or Corfu hotter?
Crete is hotter in spring and autumn, and the two are level in August. The average October high over 2016 to 2025 was 24.7°C in Heraklion and 22.4°C in Corfu (as of September 2026, source: Open-Meteo). In August it was 30.9°C in Heraklion and 31.3°C in Corfu.
Do you need a car in Crete?
Yes, if you want Crete's famous beaches and sights, because the island is long and they're far apart. A medium hire car typically costs about £46 a day in Chania and £41 in Heraklion (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Elafonisi has bus access and Balos doesn't, according to the Region of Crete (as of September 2026, source: Region of Crete).
Can kids do the Samaria Gorge in Crete?
Teenagers who walk well can do the full Samaria Gorge, which runs about 15 km and takes 6 to 7 hours (as of September 2026, source: NECCA). The path may open from 10 April to 31 October, but NECCA closes it on bad-weather days, as it did on 26 September 2026. Younger children can walk in from Agia Roumeli to the Portes narrows instead. From the boat quay it's about 2 km to the park entrance and about 1.5 km more to the Portes, roughly 7 km there and back (as of September 2026, source: NECCA). Adults pay €10, or €6 each on a family ticket, and under-18s enter free (as of September 2026, source: NECCA).
How long is the flight to Crete and Corfu from the UK?
From London, flights average 3h 16m to Corfu and about 4 hours to Crete (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). KAYAK puts London to Heraklion at 4h 02m and London to Chania at 4h 03m. That makes Corfu about 45 minutes shorter each way.
Is Crete bigger than Corfu?
Yes, and Crete is the largest Greek island, according to the Region of Crete (as of September 2026, source: Region of Crete). Crossing Crete by road from Kissamos to Sitia is about 305 km, a drive of 4 hours to 5 hours 15 minutes (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap). On Corfu, Kassiopi to Kavos is about 79 km, or 90 to 115 minutes.

How we checked these figures
All figures were read on 26 and 27 September 2026. Basket: two adults and two children flying from London in August, seven days. Flights are KAYAK's August average return fare on each route page, times four seats (children's fares can differ by airline); KAYAK gives August at £361 for London to Chania and £267 for London to Corfu, and its average flight times. Car hire is KAYAK's "Medium car hire … typically costs around" figure for Chania, Heraklion and Corfu, times seven days, and that figure is a typical rate rather than an August one. We priced a medium car rather than the small class to leave room for two child seats and luggage. KAYAK's car pages also carry a second medium-car figure, an "on average" rate of £26 a day in Chania, £20 in Heraklion and £38 in Corfu, which is why the table shows the full range. Drive times are rounded ranges across two routers on OpenStreetMap data, OSRM and Valhalla, measured between town centres and the beach or site, so each one is a map estimate and real drives with traffic, stops and car seats take longer. Temperatures are the average daily maximum for each calendar month over 2016 to 2025 from Open-Meteo's ERA5 reanalysis for the grid points nearest Heraklion (35.34N, 25.13E) and Corfu (39.62N, 19.92E), not a single weather station, so they can differ from a station's readings. Meal prices are Numbeo's "Meal for Two at a Mid-Range Restaurant", updated 18 August 2026 for Chania, 28 August 2026 for Heraklion and 19 June 2026 for Corfu. Hotel prices are left out on purpose: they depend on the resort, the room and the board, so compare your own quotes. Ticket prices are the full adult rates on each operator's own page. Not obtained from this runtime: the Ministry of Culture's free-admission rules page, so the article states no child admission rule for Knossos.
Prices were read in September 2026 for an August week and will change. Fares and car hire rates move daily.
