Best Age for Disney World: 5 to 9, or 40 Inches Tall

Quick answer: the best age for Disney World

Picking the year by birthday alone can leave a child 2 inches short of the rides an older sibling came for. At 38 inches a child can ride 8 of Disney World's height-limited rides; at 40 inches, 15 (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Start with the height table in Step 1, then map ride days in the Visual Itinerary Builder.

Best age for Disney World by age

Ages 5 to 9 are the best age for a first Disney World trip, and 2 is the worst. The table lines up each birthday with the median CDC height and the rides that height opens.

Read your own child against the table, not the birthday. If your youngest is 5 or older, book the trip; if not, the height test in Step 1 and the wait-or-go call in Step 3 decide it.

Step 1. Measure your child before you pick the year

Tonight · 5 minutes

Measure first, because Disney World limits 21 theme-park rides by height, not age, with minimums from 32 to 48 inches (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Most attractions have no minimum, but headliners like Slinky Dog Dash and Space Mountain do.

Sources: minimum heights, Walt Disney World height requirements (theme parks only). Ages: CDC stature-for-age median, boys and girls averaged, interpolated between half-month rows (as of September 2026).

The 40-inch line changes a trip most. It lifts a child from 8 rides to 15, and the median child reaches it around the 4th birthday (as of September 2026, source: CDC). Our Disney World height requirements page lists every ride in inches and centimeters.

If your child is within an inch of 40 when you book, go. If they're 3 or more inches short and the big rides are the point, wait a year.

Step 2. What age is free for Disney World? Check the ticket ages

When you pick dates · 10 minutes

Children under 3 get into Disney World free, with no theme park ticket; ages 3 to 9 pay the child price, and 10 and older pay the adult price (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World).

The child price is a small discount: $5 less than the adult price on any one-day ticket (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). On the 2026 dates Disney still sells, a one-day Magic Kingdom ticket runs $159 to $209 (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Across 2027 the same ticket runs $139 to $219 (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). So turning 3 adds a whole ticket. Turning 10 adds $5 on a one-day ticket, and about $18 on a 4-day one (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World).

Don't let the free years set the date. Going before the 3rd birthday saves one ticket, but it buys a trip for a child who clears 2 or 3 of the height-limited rides. When you buy, open Disney's price in one tab and Undercover Tourist's Disney World ticket prices in another, and buy the cheaper one.

Step 3. Should I wait until my child is older to go to Disney World?

Before you book · one conversation

At 3, wait, unless an older sibling sets the year. At 4, go if they measure 40 inches, otherwise wait. Memory is the reason to wait. In a 2014 Emory University study, children described recent events at age 3 (as of September 2026, source: Emory University). At ages 5 to 7 they still recalled 63 to 72 percent of them. By 8 and 9, they recalled only about 35 percent.

So a once-only trip at 3 is mostly a trip for the adults. Run the Three-Question Decision Test: what do your kids' ages allow, how much time do you have, and what's your break point? If the first answer is "not much yet", wait.

Step 4. Run the readiness test on an ordinary weekend

4 to 6 months out · one weekend

Your child is ready when they can handle a long, loud day out and enjoy the next one. Try four checks:

Rider Switch helps: one adult waits outside the queue with the child, then up to two people from that group ride without the regular wait (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Children under 7 must ride with someone 14 or older (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World).

Three or four yes answers: book it. Two or fewer: wait a year, or plan shorter park days.

Step 5. Set the pace to your youngest

60 days out · about an hour

Under 5, plan half days with a hotel break after lunch; from 5, plan full days with one long rest. For a daily frame, Disney travel planner Ashleigh Giliberto's 3-2-1 rule is "three rides, two experiences, one dining", as reported by Reader's Digest (as of September 2026, source: Reader's Digest).

Book character meals early. Disney World table-service reservations open 60 days ahead. Guests with a Disney Resort hotel reservation can book their entire length of stay, up to a 10-night stay, at that mark (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). That's the 60/10 rule.

Stay near the parks if you need a nap break. Compare Lake Buena Vista hotels on Expedia with Disney's own resort rates and book the cheaper tab.

Step 6. Pick the Disney that fits your youngest

Before you book · 15 minutes

Under 4, the best Disney park for kids is usually Disneyland or a Disney cruise. At 4, go if they measure 40 inches, otherwise wait, and from 5 Disney World's ride list opens up. Disneyland rates best for ages 2 to 8, since its two parks sit close together.

The best age for a Disney cruise is 3 to 10, the ages that can check into the Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab, as long as the child is fully toilet-trained (as of September 2026, source: Disney Cruise Line). Below that, the "it's a small world" nursery takes children from 6 months to 3 years old on most itineraries (as of September 2026, source: Disney Cruise Line). Our Disneyland Paris guide says skip Paris under 3, because the ride lineup there mostly opens up at 4 to 5.

Then pick the week. Late August and September bring Disney World's lowest ticket prices, down to $119 a day at Animal Kingdom on 2027 dates (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World); our cheapest time to visit Disney World guide has the calendar. If your youngest has not reached 40 inches and you can fly west, price Disneyland first.

The mistakes that cost families money

The readiness checklist

Our take

For most families, the best age for a first Disney World trip is 5 to 9, when a typical child stands about 43 inches or more and still pays the child price (as of September 2026, sources: CDC, Walt Disney World). At 4, go if they measure 40 inches, otherwise wait. At 3, wait, unless an older sibling sets the year. Our call on characters: the magic fades with age, and by the adult-ticket years coasters, not characters, carry the trip.

The tradeoff: waiting for 5 gives up the free years, but those years buy a trip for a child who rides 2 or 3 of the height-limited rides. From 10, the price barely moves. This week, measure your youngest and price the Disney World trip for your kids' ages. Then our how to plan a Disney World trip guide takes it from there.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best age for Disney World?

The best age for a first Disney World trip is 5 to 9. A typical 5-year-old is about 43 inches, which opens 16 of Disney World's 21 height-limited rides (as of September 2026, sources: CDC, Walt Disney World). Children pay the child ticket price until 10 (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). At 4, go if they measure 40 inches, otherwise wait, and at 3, wait, unless an older sibling sets the year.

What is the worst age for Disney World?

The worst age for Disney World is 2, at least for a first trip. The median 2-year-old stands about 34 inches, which clears only 2 of the 21 height-limited rides (as of September 2026, sources: CDC, Walt Disney World). Few adults remember events from before age 3 (as of September 2026, source: Emory University). The tween years are not a second soft spot on our test, because by 10 a child clears every height-limited ride. Go at 2 only if you plan to go back.

Is 5 a good age for Disney World?

Yes, 5 is a good age for Disney World. The median 5-year-old stands about 43 inches (as of September 2026, source: CDC). That opens 16 of Disney World's 21 height-limited rides (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). The misses are the 44-inch rides, Space Mountain, Avatar Flight of Passage and Expedition Everest, plus the 48-inch pair, TRON Lightcycle / Run and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. Most 5-year-olds manage a full park day with one long rest.

Is it worth taking a 4 year old to Disney World?

At 4, go if they measure 40 inches, otherwise wait. The median 4-year-old is right at that line, which opens 15 of 21 height-limited rides (as of September 2026, sources: CDC, Walt Disney World). At 38 inches it drops to 8. Plan half days with a midday break, and use Rider Switch for the rides they can't do.

What is the 3/2/1 rule for Disney?

The 3/2/1 rule is a daily plan for a Disney park day: three rides, two experiences and one dining. It comes from Disney travel planner Ashleigh Giliberto, as reported by Reader's Digest (as of September 2026, source: Reader's Digest). It keeps a young child's day to a few goals instead of a full ride list. Anything past those six is a bonus.

What is the 60/10 rule for Disney?

The 60/10 rule is Disney World's dining window. Table-service reservations open 60 days ahead, and guests with a Disney Resort hotel reservation can book their entire length of stay, up to a 10-night stay, at that mark (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Off-site guests book one day at a time. The head start matters most for hard-to-get tables.

What's the cheapest month to go to Disney World?

September and late August are the cheapest time to go to Disney World. On Disney's 2027 calendar the one-day floor is $119 at Animal Kingdom and $139 at Magic Kingdom (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Our cheapest time to visit Disney World guide lists the exact weeks and hotel seasons.

What is the 2pm rule at Disney World?

The 2pm rule was a Park Hopper limit that kept guests out of a second park until 2 p.m. Disney retired it on January 9, 2024, so a ticket with Park Hopper benefits now lets you visit another theme park at any time of day (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). With kids under 6, skip the Park Hopper and spend the money on a character meal.

Is it cheaper to buy Disney World tickets at Costco?

No, not for tickets alone: Costco doesn't sell Disney World tickets separately, only inside Costco Travel vacation packages with a hotel stay (as of September 2026, sources: Costco Travel, Magic Guides). A Costco package can still beat booking the pieces yourself, so price it as a whole. For tickets only, our guide to the cheapest way to buy Disney World tickets compares the routes.

Is there an age limit for Disney World?

There's no upper age limit at Disney World. Guests under 14 must be with someone 14 or older to enter a theme park, and children under 7 must ride with someone 14 or older (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Under 3, children need no ticket at all.

Data Sources and Verification

Ride heights, park rules, Rider Switch, ticket ages, one-day prices, the dining window and the Park Hopper rule were read on Walt Disney World's own pages, and the cruise club and nursery ages on Disney Cruise Line's own pages, in September 2026. Heights by age are CDC growth-chart medians.

How we checked these figures

Every Disney figure was read in September 2026 on the fact owner's page, rendered in a browser and saved at read time. Ride minimums come from Walt Disney World's height requirements page; we counted the 21 theme-park rides that carry a minimum and left out the water parks. Median heights are the 50th percentile of the CDC stature-for-age data table, taken at each birthday and converted from centimeters; the age at which the median child reaches each height is interpolated between the table's half-month rows. Ticket ages and one-day prices come from Walt Disney World's own theme park ticket page and the date-by-date price calendar behind it, rendered in a browser on September 27, 2026; the calendar it served ran from that day to October 31, 2027, so the 2027 figures cover dates up to that cut-off. The memory figures are from Emory University's 2014 study in the journal Memory (83 children recorded at age 3), as reported by Emory and ScienceDaily. The dining window and the Park Hopper rule come from Walt Disney World's own dining FAQ and Park Hopper pages, both of which render in a browser. ETP did no site visits for this guide.

Disney prices tickets by date and changes ride lineups. Check the height list and your dates on Disney's site before you buy (as of September 2026).
