Orlando Family Vacation: Kids' Heights Decide the Parks

Quick answer: Orlando family vacation

The costly mistake is booking park days before measuring the kids. A Universal day for this family costs $529.96 at the lowest published prices, and a child under 48 inches can't ride Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). Start with the heights section, then price your own dates in the Budget Calculator.

Which Orlando parks fit your kids' heights?

Your youngest child's height picks the parks. Under 40 inches, build the week around Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom; at 48 inches, every Disney World ride opens and Universal earns two full days.

Disney World has 21 height-gated theme park rides, and 15 of them open at 40 inches (as of July 2026, source: Walt Disney World). TRON Lightcycle / Run sets the tallest line at 48 inches, and Space Mountain needs 44 (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Our Disney World height requirements page lists all 21.

Universal is the taller park. Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure needs 48 inches, Jurassic World VelociCoaster 51 and The Incredible Hulk Coaster 54 (as of July 2026, source: Universal Orlando). Epic Universe, Universal's newest park, puts three rides at 48 inches and five at 40 (as of August 2026, source: Universal Orlando).

Under 40 inches: Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom first

Disney World is better than Universal for kids under 6, because Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom run many rides with no height minimum. Universal's headliners need 48 to 54 inches. Magic Kingdom tags Dumbo, Peter Pan's Flight, Pirates of the Caribbean and the PeopleMover as Any Height, and so does Animal Kingdom's Kilimanjaro Safaris (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). For a preschooler, that makes Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom the best parks in Orlando. Skip a second Universal park until they grow.

40 to 47 inches: most of Disney, a slice of Universal

At 40 inches a child rides Tiana's Bayou Adventure, Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Tower of Terror (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Universal still says no to Hagrid's at this height. If your youngest child sits here, book three or four Disney days and one Universal day.

48 inches and up: Universal pulls its weight

Ages 6 to 10 is the best age to take kids to Orlando, once the child measures 48 inches: that opens every Disney World ride and Hagrid's. For teens, book Universal's Islands of Adventure and Epic Universe, plus EPCOT's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind at 42 inches (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). If the whole family clears 54 inches, give Universal two days and Disney two or three.

Universal Orlando planning tips for families

Book a Universal hotel if you'll spend two or more days there. Every on-site hotel tier gets Early Park Admission of up to an hour before opening, and three hotels include Express Unlimited (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). Parking costs $35 whether you prepay online or pay at the toll plaza, so there is nothing to save by buying it early (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). Water-park fans should note that Volcano Bay closes from October 26, 2026 to on or before April 1, 2027 (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). Our Epic Universe family guide prices an Epic Universe day for a family and covers its rope-drop plan.

How many days do you need for an Orlando family vacation?

Most families need 5 to 7 days in Orlando, and we'd book seven nights: two or three Disney World days, two Universal days, and rest days between them. Seven nights fits the ticket windows. A Disney 4-day ticket starting August 3, 2027 stays valid through August 9, a week after its start date rather than four days (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Universal's 3-Day plus 2 Days Free is not a ticket you can buy on its own: the two free days come with a vacation package that needs a 5-night minimum stay (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando).

Buy multi-day tickets, not single days. On August 3, 2027, a one-day Magic Kingdom ticket costs $189 for ages 10 and up (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). A 4-day ticket starting the same day works out to $156.15 a day, and a 7-day ticket to $103.16. On that 4-day ticket this family saves $523.46 against buying one-day Magic Kingdom tickets for four days.

Universal's day rate falls as the ticket gets longer. Here is what two adults and kids 6 and 10 pay before tax:

Universal ticketAges 10+, per dayAges 3 to 9, per dayTotal for this family
1-Day, one park (Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure)$124.99$119.99$494.96
2-Day, one park per day (Epic Universe plus one of the other two)$127$122$1,006
Special 3-Day, one day per park (Epic Universe, Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure)$99$99$1,188
5-Day park-to-park, all four parks$106$104$2,110

Source: Universal Orlando ticket store (September 2026). Before tax, parking not included. Same basket as the one-day table below.

For one Universal day, buy the 1-day ticket. For two, the 2-Day one-park-per-day ticket, at $503 a day for this family. For three, the Special 3-Day is the cheapest day rate on the store, $396 a day. Stretch to the 5-day park-to-park only if you will really use five days.

What does an Orlando family vacation cost?

An Orlando family vacation for four costs about $5,831 on a budget and $10,966 at a comfort level for seven nights, before flights (as of June 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans). That comfort week is the priciest of the 28 destinations in our cost index, and Orlando is the only one where a budget week tops $5,000.

BandWhat it coversSeven nights for four, before flights
BudgetSimpler lodging and lighter daily spending, on the ground$5,831
ComfortMid-range hotel and a typical mix of meals and activities$10,966
PremiumThe comfort week plus one Lightning Lane Multi Pass day at each Disney park at its top price ($624 for four)$11,590

Sources: Endless Travel Plans Family Vacation Cost Index 2026, Orlando row (June 2026; flights excluded); Theme Park Shark, Lightning Lane Multi Pass top prices per person: Magic Kingdom $45, EPCOT $37, Hollywood Studios $39, Animal Kingdom $35 (March 2026).

Run the Real-Cost Test on the park days, because the ticket price is never the bill. Disney and Universal both charge for the car, and Disney's own pricing calendar lists tickets before Florida's 6.5% sales tax (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Universal's store adds tax at checkout too (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). On Disney's cheapest date, tax adds $30.63 to this family's four tickets.

Before sales tax, except Disney and Universal parking, which include it. Basket: two adults with kids 6 and 10, priced as three tickets at the ages 10 and up price plus one child ticket, because the 10-year-old pays the adult price at both resorts.

The best-value family theme park day in Orlando in 2026 is SeaWorld: $239.96 buys four online tickets, about half of the $471 the same four cost at Disney World on its cheapest date. A Disney World day for this family runs $506 on the cheapest date and $906 at Magic Kingdom on the peak date (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure comes to $529.96 with parking (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). For kids under 10, SeaWorld's price and its animal shows make it the cheap third or fourth park day; for teens, Universal is worth the extra.

Food is the other swing line. SeaWorld sells All-Day Dining as a $40 add-on per ticket (as of September 2026, source: SeaWorld Orlando). The federal meals allowance for Orlando is $80 a day per traveler, a fair ceiling for a family that eats every meal out (as of September 2026, source: U.S. General Services Administration). For a Disney-only week line by line, see Disney World cost for a family of four.

Buy Disney tickets in two tabs: Disney's own site and Undercover Tourist's Disney World tickets, an authorized reseller. Check current rates on both and book the cheaper tab; if they match, book direct.

Where should families stay in Orlando?

Stay on International Drive if the week mixes Disney and Universal, and at a Disney hotel if every park day is Disney. International Drive sits 13 minutes from Universal and 27 minutes from Magic Kingdom's Transportation and Ticket Center by car, and 25 minutes from the airport (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing). That central spot is why it's Orlando's best-value base for a two-resort week.

A Disney hotel pays you back in parking. Standard theme park parking is included for Disney Resort hotel guests, against $35 a day for everyone else, and overnight self-parking at Disney Resort hotels is free (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Over four Disney park days, that's $140 a family doesn't spend.

For Universal-heavy weeks, stay on Universal property. Its hotels share Early Park Admission of up to an hour at every price tier, and the three top-tier hotels include Express Unlimited (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando).

Families of five or more should price a suite or a Kissimmee vacation home against two hotel rooms. As a yardstick, the federal lodging rate for Orlando is $145 a night from October to December 2026 and $178 from January to March 2027 (as of September 2026, source: U.S. General Services Administration). If your dates fall in January to March, book early: that's Orlando's high-rate quarter.

What is the best month to visit Orlando, FL?

The best time to visit Orlando is late August through September for price, or October through early November for weather. The catch is heat: Orlando's normal high is 91.6°F in August and 89.6°F in September (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). Disney's one-day prices move with the date, so check the window you can actually travel in:

WindowDisney one-day ticket, ages 10+
Rest of September 2026$134 to $184
October 2026$164 to $199
December 2026$174 to $209
August 2027$119 to $194
September 2027$119 to $189

Source: Walt Disney World theme park ticket pricing calendar, read September 27, 2026; its window runs to October 31, 2027. Low ends are Animal Kingdom dates, high ends Magic Kingdom. Ages 3 to 9 pay $5 less on every date. Before sales tax.

Apply the Shoulder-Season Lens and the crossover is October. The normal high drops to 84.7°F in October and 78.3°F in November (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). October 2026 tickets start at $164, against $134 for the rest of September 2026 (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). If your kids wilt above 90°F, pay the October premium. If price rules and they nap through a hot afternoon, take September. The $119 floor does not come back until late August 2027.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 and peaks around September 10 (as of September 2026, source: NOAA National Hurricane Center). Rain peaks in summer: June averages 8.05 inches, against 1.79 in November (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). January to March brings cool mornings, with a 49.5°F normal low in January, and the year's highest federal hotel rate. For the exact cheapest Disney dates, see our cheapest time to visit Disney World.

What is fun to do in Orlando with kids?

The most fun things to do in Orlando with kids are the theme parks that fit their height, then Kennedy Space Center, LEGOLAND Florida and SeaWorld. Orlando's must-see attractions center on Walt Disney World's four parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom) and Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure, home to Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World VelociCoaster. Past those, the top alternatives to Disney in Orlando are Universal Orlando, SeaWorld and LEGOLAND Florida in Winter Haven. Kennedy Space Center is the one non-park day we'd book for kids 6 and up.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex charges $77 for ages 12 and up and $67 for children (as of September 2026, source: Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex). Kids 6 and 10 both pay the child price, so the family pays $288. Admission includes the bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center. Plan a full day: it's 71 minutes from International Drive by car (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing).

LEGOLAND Florida has more than 50 rides, shows and attractions for kids ages 2 to 12 (as of September 2026, source: LEGOLAND Florida Resort). It's a 55-minute drive from Magic Kingdom, so give it its own day. Our Disney World vs LEGOLAND comparison prices four park days at each for young kids.

SeaWorld's Two-Day Two Park ticket costs $50 a day and mixes SeaWorld Orlando, Aquatica Orlando, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Adventure Island (as of September 2026, source: SeaWorld Orlando). That buys a day at Aquatica, SeaWorld's Orlando water park, while Volcano Bay is closed. If your kids are 3 to 9 and love animals, add SeaWorld; if they're teens, add a second Universal day instead.

How should you plan each Orlando day?

Plan each park day around the morning and a midday break: rides first, pool or hotel nap after lunch, and back for the evening. Summers are wet, with 7.46 inches of rain in an average July (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). Save indoor Any Height rides such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion for a storm (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World).

A good seven-night rhythm is arrival day, two park days, a rest day, two park days, and a flex day for Kennedy Space Center or a second look at a favorite park. For a 4-year-old who still naps, put the rest day after the second park day, not at the end.

How do you get around Orlando with kids?

Rent a car if the week mixes Disney, Universal and a day trip; skip the car only for a Disney-only week on Disney property. Orlando's parks sit far apart: Universal to Magic Kingdom's Transportation and Ticket Center is 16.9 miles, or 32 minutes, and the airport to Magic Kingdom is 41 minutes (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing).

Parking is the fee that follows the car. Disney charges $35 a day for standard theme park parking, and Universal charges the same $35 whether you prepay or pay at the toll plaza (as of September 2026, sources: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando). Without a car, Mears Connect's standard shuttle costs $33.60 round trip per adult and $27.30 per child, both including the privilege fee recovery charge (as of September 2026, source: Mears Connect). Its child fare stops at age 9, so two adults with kids 6 and 10 pay $128.10 round trip. For a Disney-only week, take the shuttle; for anything else, the rental car wins.

What should you pack for Orlando?

Pack for heat and summer storms: rain ponchos for every child, refillable water bottles, sunscreen, hats and a spare set of dry socks. Orlando's normal high tops 88°F from May through September (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). Add a small towel for water-play areas such as Magic Kingdom's Casey Jr. Splash 'N' Soak Station, and closed-toe shoes that dry fast.

Our take

For most families, an Orlando family vacation works best as seven nights with four or five park days, based on International Drive when Disney and Universal share the week. Time it for late August through October. That fits two or three Disney days with Universal's 2-Day one-park-per-day ticket, or a Disney 4-day ticket, which runs inside a week, with one Universal day.

The one factor worth re-planning around is your youngest child's height. Under 40 inches, give Disney three or four days and Universal none, and add SeaWorld as the cheap animal day. At 40 to 47 inches, add one Universal day. At 48 inches and up, Universal earns two days, and a Universal hotel's early admission pays off. Run the Skip-If Filter honestly. If the ground budget is under $5,831, pick a cheaper week from our cost index. If July heat would break your crew, move the trip to October, when Orlando's normal high drops to 84.7°F.

Price your own week in the Family Budget Calculator, then read Disney World height requirements with the kids' measurements in hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an Orlando family vacation cost?

An Orlando family vacation for four costs about $5,831 on a budget to $10,966 at a comfort level for seven nights, before flights (as of June 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans). One Disney World park day for two adults with kids 6 and 10 runs $506 on the cheapest date, and a Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure day $529.96, both with parking (as of September 2026, sources: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando). Flights come on top and depend on your home airport.

How many days should you spend in Orlando?

Most families need 5 to 7 days in Orlando, and seven nights works best: two or three Disney World days, two Universal days and rest days between them. Disney's 4-day ticket runs inside a week, not four days (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Universal's Special 3-Day ticket covers one day at each of Epic Universe, Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure for $297 a person (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). Fewer than five days means dropping a resort.

Is $6,000 enough for an Orlando family vacation?

A budget of $6,000 covers a budget-level Orlando week on the ground for a family of four, which costs about $5,831 for seven nights (as of June 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans). It does not cover flights or a comfort-level week, which runs about $10,966 before flights. Drive in, or trim the week to five nights, if flights would push you over.

What is the best age to take kids to Orlando?

Ages 6 to 10 is the best age to take kids to Orlando, once the child measures 48 inches: that height opens every Disney World ride and Universal's Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure (as of September 2026, sources: Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando). Kids under 40 inches still have a full week at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, where many rides take any height.

Is Universal or Disney better for young kids?

Disney World is better than Universal for kids under 6, because Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom run many rides with no height minimum, such as Dumbo, Peter Pan's Flight and Kilimanjaro Safaris (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Universal's headliners need 48 to 54 inches. At 40 to 47 inches, one Universal day is enough, and two once your youngest reaches 48 inches.

Should I stay at a Disney hotel or off-property?

Stay at a Disney hotel if every park day is Disney, because standard theme park parking is included for Disney Resort hotel guests, a $35-a-day saving, and overnight parking is free (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Stay off property on International Drive if Universal is on the list: it's 13 minutes from Universal and 27 from Magic Kingdom by car (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing).

Where to go instead of Disney?

The top alternatives to Disney in Orlando are Universal Orlando, SeaWorld and LEGOLAND Florida in Winter Haven, which is built for kids ages 2 to 12 (as of September 2026, source: LEGOLAND Florida Resort). SeaWorld is the cheapest big park, from $59.99 a ticket online (as of September 2026, source: SeaWorld Orlando). For a break from rides, Kennedy Space Center charges $77 for ages 12 and up and $67 for children (as of September 2026, source: Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex).

What are the must-see attractions in Orlando?

Orlando's must-see attractions center on Walt Disney World's four parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom) and Universal Orlando's Islands of Adventure, home to Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure and Jurassic World VelociCoaster. Epic Universe is Universal's newest park, and EPCOT's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind takes riders from 42 inches (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Beyond the parks, Kennedy Space Center is the day trip for kids 6 and up.

What is the best month to visit Orlando, FL?

The best time to visit Orlando is late August through September for price, or October through early November for weather. Orlando's normal high falls from 89.6°F in September to 84.7°F in October (as of September 2026, source: NOAA). Disney's one-day tickets start at $134 for the rest of September 2026 and at $164 in October (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Avoid December if price matters, because the top date reaches $209.

What is the best family resort in Orlando?

The best family resort in Orlando is the one that matches your parks: a Universal hotel for a Universal-heavy week, a Disney Resort hotel for a Disney-only week. Every Universal hotel tier gets up to an hour of Early Park Admission, and the three top-tier Universal hotels include Express Unlimited (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). Disney Resort hotel guests park free at Disney's theme parks (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World).

What is fun to do in Orlando with kids?

The most fun things to do in Orlando with kids are the theme parks matched to their height, plus SeaWorld, LEGOLAND Florida and Kennedy Space Center. SeaWorld tickets start at $59.99 online, and Kennedy Space Center costs $288 for two adults and kids 6 and 10 (as of September 2026, sources: SeaWorld Orlando, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex). Build rest days around the hotel pool between park days.

Which Florida town is best for a family vacation with kids?

Orlando is the best Florida town for a family vacation with kids who want theme parks, since Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando sit 32 minutes apart by car (as of September 2026, source: OpenStreetMap routing). It's also the priciest week in our cost index, $10,966 at a comfort level before flights (as of June 2026, source: Endless Travel Plans). If the kids want a beach more than rides, head to the Gulf Coast. Sanibel Island gets more than 400 types of seashell washing ashore on its beaches every day (as of September 2026, source: Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau). Naples sits on more than 30 miles of Gulf coastline (as of September 2026, source: Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention and Visitors Bureau).

Is there an all-inclusive resort in Florida for families?

No Orlando park resort is all-inclusive: Disney, Universal and SeaWorld sell rooms, park tickets and food separately. The closest thing is a Walt Disney Travel Company package bought with a dining plan, which prepays meals and snacks alongside the room and tickets. In 2026 the dining plan is free for kids ages 3 to 9. You have to book a room with the Disney Resorts Collection and a dining plan for each guest ages 10 and up, and gratuities are excluded (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). SeaWorld's closest thing is its All-Day Dining add-on at $40 per ticket (as of September 2026, source: SeaWorld Orlando). Club Med's Sandpiper Bay page lists that resort as closed (as of September 2026, source: Club Med), so budget food as its own line.

Where to go for a 3 day weekend in Florida?

For a 3-day weekend with kids, Orlando works if you pick one resort: two park days and a pool day. Disney's cheapest 2-day ticket for two adults with kids 6 and 10 costs $1,022.89 (as of September 2026, source: Walt Disney World). Two days of standard theme park parking adds $70, so those park days come to $1,092.89. Universal's 2-Day one-park-per-day ticket costs the same family $1,006 before parking (as of September 2026, source: Universal Orlando). Stay on International Drive to keep drives short.

Data Sources and Verification

We read Walt Disney World, Universal Orlando, SeaWorld Orlando, Kennedy Space Center, LEGOLAND Florida, Mears Connect, NOAA and GSA pages in September 2026, and priced a family of four: two adults and kids 6 and 10.

How we checked these figures

Disney World parking, ride heights and Any Height tags were read on Disney's own pages on September 27, 2026. Every Disney ticket price here comes from Disney's own theme park ticket pricing calendar, read on September 27, 2026 through the ticket page's own pricing service; its window runs September 27, 2026 to October 31, 2027, ages 3 to 9 pay $5 below the ages 10 and up price on every date, the lowest one-day price in the window is $119 at Animal Kingdom and the highest is $219 at Magic Kingdom on February 12, 2027. The 4-day and 7-day figures are the calendar's own prices for a start date of August 3, 2027, when the 4-day ticket stays valid through August 9. The count of 21 height-gated Disney rides and the 15 that open at 40 inches come from Disney's official height list as read for our Disney World height requirements page in July 2026. Universal Orlando's ticket, parking, package, closure, height and hotel-perk figures are our reads of Universal's own pages and its ticket store on September 27, 2026, taken in a browser because Universal blocks automated reads. SeaWorld Orlando does not publish a parking price on its directions page, so the SeaWorld row shows tickets only. Drive times are OSRM free-flow routes on OpenStreetMap data, measured from Orlando International Airport, ICON Park on International Drive, Universal's parking garages, Magic Kingdom's Transportation and Ticket Center, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex and LEGOLAND Florida; real traffic adds time. Weather normals are NOAA's 1991 to 2020 monthly normals for Orlando International Airport. The week totals are the Orlando row of our Family Vacation Cost Index (seven nights, one room, lodging, food, activities, local transport and hidden fees, flights excluded, June 2026 pricing); the premium band adds one Lightning Lane Multi Pass day at each Disney park at Theme Park Shark's top prices (March 2026). Every family total on this page is three tickets at the ages 10 and up price plus one child ticket, because Disney and Universal both charge the adult price from age 10, so the 10-year-old in our family pays adult and the 6-year-old pays child.

Theme park tickets are priced by date and change often. Check your own dates before you buy. Last verified September 2026.
