Bali vs Phuket for Families: Your School Holiday Decides

Quick answer: Bali vs Phuket for families

  • For a family of four, book Bali in the July or spring break and Phuket in January: Bali gets under 100 mm of rain a month April to October, Phuket under 62 mm December to March (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization).
  • The priced weeks are close: Phuket comes out about A$210 cheaper at the bottom of both fare ranges, Bali about A$330 cheaper at the top. The basket is four Sydney seats, seven room nights and entry charges (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).
  • Bali has a direct Sydney flight every day, average 6h 29m; Phuket has one on Jetstar 3 days a week, average 9h 10m (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).
  • Entry costs a family of four about A$210 in Bali, a Rp500,000 visa on arrival plus a Rp150,000 levy each, while Thailand publishes no entry charge (as of September 2026, sources: Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration, Bali Provincial Government, Smartraveller).
  • Skip this page if you have already chosen Bali: our Bali with kids guide ranks Nusa Dua, Seminyak and Ubud.
  • Below: the school holiday that flips the answer from 18 December 2026, and the Club Med closure that runs to 31 May 2027.

Ask a chatbot which island is cheaper from Australia and it will point you at Bali's airfares. The fares do favour Bali. Bali's typical Sydney return seat tops out at A$882, Phuket's at A$1,136 (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Bali charges a family of four to enter and Karon rooms average less a weeknight than Bali's, so at the bottom of both fare ranges the Phuket week finishes about A$210 cheaper. The island is close to a coin toss. The month is not. In January Bali gets 345 mm of rain against 23.3 mm in Phuket (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization).

Bali vs Phuket for families, side by side

Bali is the cheaper flight and the wider holiday. Phuket is the drier beach in the summer break. The weeks cost much the same, so this is about the calendar and your kids' ages.

Which one is better, Bali or Phuket?

Neither island is better for every family, and for Australians the school holiday you can take settles it. Bali is drier and cheaper to reach in the July and spring breaks. Phuket is drier in the summer break, and it costs the most to reach in exactly those weeks.

So the answer is a rule, not a winner. Take Bali if you can travel between April and October, or if you want more than a resort. Take Phuket if your only free weeks fall in December or January and dry beach days matter more than variety.

Is it cheaper to go to Bali or Phuket?

Which island is cheaper for a family week depends on the fare you catch, and the two swap places across the range. At the bottom of both typical fare ranges the Phuket week finishes about A$210 cheaper. At the top the Bali week finishes about A$330 cheaper.

The dearest typical seat is what flips it. Four seats at Phuket's top typical fare swamp the entry charge and the room gap that favour Phuket lower down (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).

Fares and room averages: KAYAK, read September 2026, on both Sydney route pages and the Bali and Karon hotel pages. The fare line is KAYAK's typical return price across all itineraries on each route, including one-stop fares. The room line is KAYAK's rolling two-week average weeknight price for one double room. It moves week to week, so every total and gap here is rounded to the nearest A$10. Entry charges: the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration and the Bali Provincial Government, at the Reserve Bank of Australia rate for 25 September 2026.

When is the best time to visit Bali or Phuket with kids?

Bali is at its best from April to October and Phuket from December to March, on opposite calendars. Bali stays under 100 mm of rain a month across its dry stretch. Phuket is driest from December to March, at 23 to 62 mm. Its wettest stretch is May to October, at 237 to 387 mm (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization).

Rainfall: World Meteorological Organization, read September 2026; Denpasar is a 1961 to 1990 series and the Phuket file states no period. School holidays: the New South Wales, Victorian, Queensland and Western Australian education departments, read September 2026. The table prints the NSW windows, the 2026 to 27 summer break and the 2027 autumn, winter and spring ones. Winter, spring and summer fall in the same months in all four states, within a week or two of each other, and all inside the same island's dry stretch. The autumn break does not: Victoria and Queensland start theirs on 26 March 2027, about two and a half weeks before New South Wales. That is a month this table gives to Phuket, so the April call below is New South Wales and Western Australia.

Apply the Shoulder-Season Lens, which asks whether an island's dry weeks and its cheap weeks land in the same months. April nearly works for both, but not equally: Bali is down to 88 mm while Phuket has climbed to 137.8 mm. For a New South Wales family April is a Bali month with a softer Phuket fare, not a tie.

The school holiday that flips the answer

The answer flips on 18 December 2026, when the NSW summer holidays start in the Eastern division and run to 27 January 2027 (as of September 2026, source: NSW Department of Education).

From that date Bali is in its wet season and Phuket is in its dry one. Bali gets 276 mm of rain in December, against Phuket's 61.9 mm.

The airlines know. December is the dearest month on both routes, and it is far dearer to Phuket: KAYAK's December average is A$1,006 a seat to Bali against A$1,459 to Phuket. For four seats that is about A$1,810 more to fly to Phuket (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). January to Phuket is softer, at about A$1,160 a seat.

So the summer break costs you either the weather or the money. If your kids can shrug off an afternoon downpour, take Bali in December and spend that A$1,810 on the holiday. If you need dry days, book Phuket in January rather than December.

The other two windows run the other way. The NSW winter break is 5 to 16 July 2027 and the next spring break is 27 September to 8 October 2027, both inside Bali's dry stretch. July is Bali's second dearest month, at A$895 a seat, so book about 14 weeks out, a window KAYAK puts at about 15 per cent under a last-minute fare (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).

Which has better beaches for kids, Bali or Phuket?

Phuket has the drier swimming beaches in the summer break, Bali the named calm ones. Phuket runs 23 to 62 mm of rain a month from December to March. From May to October it runs 237 to 387 mm (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization). Those beaches: Mai Khao, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Nai Harn.

In Bali, MyBaliTrips, a Bali tour operator, calls Sanur "ideal for family vacations" and Mengiat, in the Nusa Dua area, "calm water and no strong waves". It also calls Nusa Dua itself "Famous for its surf spot", so the area is not one long calm bay (as of September 2026, source: MyBaliTrips).

The safety line matters more than the sand. Dr Rob Brander, who writes Science of the Surf, says of Kuta that "it gets consistent waves, and with waves, comes rip currents". He adds that "there's lifeguards there and like Australia, the main swimming areas are marked by red and yellow flags" (as of September 2026, source: Science of the Surf). MyBaliTrips is blunter: "lifeguards do not work on all Balinese beaches".

Teach your kids the flags on either island before the first swim.

Is Bali or Phuket better for families with toddlers?

Phuket edges ahead for toddlers, but only at a west coast resort base from December to March. Those are its driest months, at 23 to 62 mm of rain, and when the resorts fill and the fares peak (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization).

Bali's answer for toddlers is a beach rather than a resort programme. Sanur and Mengiat are the calm water beaches the Bali tour operator MyBaliTrips names, and Phuket cannot match them in July, when its rain hits 284.1 mm (as of September 2026, sources: MyBaliTrips, World Meteorological Organization).

Our age call for Bali is kids of 5 and up, because the temples, rice terraces and inland drives need legs. For a whole-country trip rather than one Phuket beach, our Bali vs Thailand comparison puts Bali ahead for under-8s and Thailand ahead for kids 8 and up.

The Club Med trap that costs you the kids club

Club Med Bali is taking guests aged 12 years and above only from 1 July 2026 to 31 May 2027, so its kids clubs and teen programmes are shut for that window. Club Med prints both 28 and 31 May as the end date, so plan on the later one (as of September 2026, source: Club Med).

Club Med Phuket is running normally, with five age bands (as of September 2026, source: Club Med):

Read the asterisk: childcare for under-4s is optional and at extra cost.

This is one operator, not the islands. Plenty of Bali resorts run their own kids clubs, and our Bali with kids guide lists them by area. But if Club Med was the reason you were leaning Bali, that reason is gone until 31 May 2027.

How long are flights from Australia to Bali and Phuket?

Sydney to Bali averages 6h 29m and Sydney to Phuket 9h 10m, both direct (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Bali has a direct flight every day. Phuket has one 3 days a week, on Jetstar.

Bali fares are cheapest about 14 weeks out, about 15 per cent under a last-minute fare. Phuket fares are cheapest about 22 weeks out, about 21 per cent under (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).

If you want both islands in one trip, FlightConnections lists AirAsia as the only non-stop from Denpasar to Phuket, about 4 hours (as of September 2026, source: FlightConnections, a schedule aggregator).

How much does a week in Bali cost for a family of 4?

On our basket a Bali week for four costs about A$4,370 to A$5,740: four Sydney return seats at KAYAK's typical adult price, seven nights in one room, and entry charges for four (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK).

It is a partial cost, and it is meant to be. Food, transfers, tours, insurance and a second room sit outside it, and our Bali with kids guide owns the whole-holiday number.

KAYAK's average room is a double, so a family of four books a family room or two, and that moves the total. Price your own dates in the Budget Calculator.

When Bali wins for families

Bali wins when you travel between April and October, or when your kids want more than a beach. Apply the Skip-If Filter: list what would spoil the trip, then rule out the island that causes it. These conditions point to Bali:

Book the temple and rice terrace day early in the week, while everyone is still fresh: family temple and rice terrace tours in Ubud on Viator.

A tiered Balinese lake temple on a small island of lily pads, with forested hills behind under a clear blue sky

When Phuket wins for families

Phuket wins when your only free weeks are the Australian summer break and dry beach days matter more than variety.

Our ranking of Thai islands for families scores Phuket 22 out of 25 and calls the Andaman coast best from November to April. Book the island day early, in case weather closes it later: Phuket to Phi Phi family day trips on Viator.

What each island gives up

Bali gives up the dry December week and charges at the border. Phuket gives up the daily Sydney flight and the variety inland. If your kids would be bored by the fourth beach day, book Bali. If rain would ruin the one holiday you get this year, book Phuket and go in January.

Our take

Bali is the better family holiday for most Australian families, because it goes beyond the beach and its dry season covers three of the four NSW school breaks, the autumn, winter and spring ones. Phuket is the stronger pick for families with young children who want a resort base, and only from December to March, its driest months.

What changed our mind is the price. This page used to say Bali runs 20 to 30 per cent cheaper. On today's read the Phuket week comes out about A$210 cheaper at the bottom of both fare ranges, and the Bali week about A$330 cheaper at the top (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). So the saving is no longer the reason to pick Bali. The reason is the calendar, and your school holidays set that, not you.

Run your dates in the Budget Calculator for one island, then again for the other. If you land on Bali, our Bali with kids guide ranks Nusa Dua, Seminyak and Ubud by your kids' ages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which one is better, Bali or Phuket?

Neither island is better for every family. For Australians the school holiday decides it. Take Bali in the July and spring breaks, when it stays under 100 mm of rain a month. Take Phuket in the summer break, in January rather than December, when it runs 23 to 62 mm (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization). On price the two weeks swap places: the Phuket week comes out about A$210 cheaper at the bottom of both fare ranges, and the Bali week about A$330 cheaper at the top.

Is it cheaper to go to Bali or Phuket?

It depends on the fare you catch. Our basket is four Sydney return seats, seven room nights and entry charges. On it, Phuket is about A$210 cheaper at the bottom of both fare ranges, and Bali about A$330 cheaper at the top (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). The old 20 to 30 per cent gap does not survive today's read.

Is it better to visit Thailand or Bali?

That is a whole-country question rather than an island one, and our Bali vs Thailand comparison owns it. It puts Bali ahead for under-8s, a first trip to Asia and one-base trips, and Thailand ahead for kids 8 and up. This page compares Bali against one Thai island.

Is Bali or Thailand prettier?

Prettier has no source we can stand behind, so here is the difference that does: Bali is one island, and Thailand is a country with islands, cities and mountains. Our Bali vs Thailand comparison covers that wider choice.

Which part of Thailand is best to visit with family?

Our ranking of Thai islands for families scores Phuket 22 out of 25 and puts it first, and it calls the Andaman coast best from November to April. That is our score rather than a fact of the world, and that page owns this question.

Which is nicer, Phuket or Bali?

They are nice at different things. Phuket is the drier beach in the summer break, at 23 to 62 mm of rain a month from December to March (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization). Bali is the wider holiday, with lake and cliff temples, rice terraces and inland drives, plus the calm water beaches MyBaliTrips, a Bali tour operator, names at Sanur and Mengiat (as of September 2026, source: MyBaliTrips).

Which is better for kids, Bali or Thailand?

Our Bali vs Thailand comparison owns that call: Bali for kids under 8, a first trip to Asia or a one-base trip, and Thailand for kids 8 and up. This page is narrower, and compares Bali against one Thai island.

Is Bali or Phuket better for families with toddlers?

Phuket edges ahead for toddlers at a west coast resort base from December to March, its driest months at 23 to 62 mm of rain (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization). Outside those months Bali is the safer bet, and MyBaliTrips, a Bali tour operator, calls Sanur and Mengiat calm water with no strong waves (as of September 2026, source: MyBaliTrips). Club Med Phuket takes children from 0 to 2 years, but childcare under 4 is optional and at extra cost (as of September 2026, source: Club Med).

How much does a week in Bali cost for a family of 4?

On our basket, about A$4,370 to A$5,740: four Sydney return seats at KAYAK's typical adult price, seven nights in one room at Bali's average weeknight rate, and entry charges for four (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Food, transfers and tours sit outside it. Our Bali with kids guide prices the whole holiday.

Which has better beaches for kids, Bali or Phuket?

Phuket has the drier swimming beaches from December to March, at Mai Khao, Kamala, Patong, Karon, Kata and Nai Harn. Phuket runs 23 to 62 mm of rain a month then. From May to October the island runs 237 to 387 mm (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization). For Bali, MyBaliTrips, a Bali tour operator, names Sanur, Mengiat and reef-protected Segara Ayu as calm water beaches (as of September 2026, source: MyBaliTrips).

When is the best time to visit Bali or Phuket with kids?

Bali is best from April to October, when it stays under 100 mm of rain a month. Phuket is driest from December to March, at 23 to 62 mm. It is wettest from May to October, at 237 to 387 mm (as of September 2026, source: World Meteorological Organization). Phuket's wettest month is September, not July.

Are there good kids clubs in Bali and Phuket resorts?

Yes on both islands, with one large exception. Club Med Phuket runs five age bands, from babies to teenagers, and childcare for under-4s is optional and at extra cost. Club Med Bali is taking guests aged 12 and above only until 31 May 2027, so its kids clubs and teen programmes are shut for that window (as of September 2026, source: Club Med). Other Bali resorts run their own clubs.

How long are flights from Australia to Bali and Phuket?

Sydney to Bali averages 6h 29m direct, every day. Sydney to Phuket averages 9h 10m direct, on Jetstar 3 days a week (as of September 2026, source: KAYAK). Between the islands, FlightConnections lists AirAsia as the one non-stop operator from Denpasar to Phuket, 2,644 km in about 4 hours (as of September 2026, source: FlightConnections).

Data Sources and Verification

In September 2026 we priced four Sydney return seats, seven room nights and the entry charges for a family of four on KAYAK's own route and hotel pages, read the Indonesian and Thai government pages for visas, levies and arrival cards, took rainfall normals from the World Meteorological Organization, read both Club Med resort pages for their kids club ages, and took the school holiday dates from the New South Wales, Victorian, Queensland and Western Australian education departments.

How we checked these figures

All figures were read in September 2026. Basket: two adults and two children, Sydney return, seven nights, one room, plus the entry charges for four. Air fares are four seats at KAYAK's typical adult return price on each route page, because KAYAK quotes per adult and does not publish a child fare. Room nights are seven at each area's average weeknight price on KAYAK's own hotel page, which is the same metric on both: the average Sunday to Thursday price over the last two weeks. That is a rolling average, so it moves week to week, which is why every total and gap on this page is rounded to the nearest A$10 and each rounded line still sums to the rounded total. The Bali figure covers the island, and the Phuket figure covers Karon, which is the Karon and Kata beach base on the west coast, because KAYAK's Phuket City page samples the town rather than the beaches this page recommends. Both are market averages across the whole hotel stock, not quotes for a named property, and they exclude taxes and fees. Entry charges for Bali are the Rp500,000 visa on arrival from the Indonesian e-Visa portal plus the Rp150,000 Bali levy per person from the Bali Provincial Government, for four people, converted at the Reserve Bank of Australia rate for 25 September 2026; the e-Visa's online processing fee is not published as a figure, so it is excluded. For Thailand we print only what the government pages state today: a visa exemption for tourism of up to 30 days for Australians from 15 September 2026, per the Tourism Authority of Thailand citing the Royal Gazette, and a free digital arrival card. We do not print a Thailand entry total. A flat 450 baht arrival fee is proposed, and the Thai Government Public Relations Department says the first phase would start 180 days after publication in the Royal Gazette, so it is not in force and not counted. Rainfall is the World Meteorological Organization's monthly normals for Denpasar and Phuket; the Denpasar series is the 1961 to 1990 period and the Phuket file does not state its period. School holiday dates come from the four state education departments, and the month-by-month table prints the New South Wales windows, because they set the April reading the page argues from. Food, local transport, tours, insurance and hotel taxes are left out of every total, because none of the owners publishes a rate a family can price against.

Fares, room averages and exchange rates were read in September 2026 and will change. Air fares move daily and by season, and entry rules can change at short notice.
