Algarve Family Holidays 2026/27: A Planner for UK Parents

Quick answer: Algarve family holidays

The costly mistake is booking holidays in the Algarve before checking the children's ages against the price bands. Slide and Splash and Zoomarine stop the junior price at 10 and charge the adult price from 11 (as of September 2026, sources: Slide and Splash, Zoomarine). Start with the area section.

Which Algarve resorts suit families with your children's ages?

Base in the Central Algarve while your children are in the junior park band, 1 metre tall up to 10 years old. That strip is Portimão, Lagoa, Silves, Albufeira and the Loulé coast, so it covers Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago.

Two facts anchor the call. Slide and Splash gives its address as Estombar, in Lagoa. Zoomarine calls itself one of Portugal's most popular theme parks, and gives its address as Guia in Albufeira. That is 10 km from Albufeira town and 40 km from Faro Airport (as of September 2026, sources: Slide and Splash, Zoomarine). And 32 of the 50 Faro district zones on Portugal's 2026 accessible beach candidate list sit in the same municipalities, against 6 west and 11 east (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal).

The junior price advantage ends at 11, when a child starts paying the adult price at both parks. From there it is our view that teenagers do better in Lagos, for its old town and boat trips, or Tavira, for its island beaches and cycling.

Central Algarve: Albufeira and the resort towns either side

Albufeira is the biggest family base in the strip, with 15 accessible beach candidates, more than any other Algarve municipality (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). Its one documented drawback is the town's Code of Conduct, which the FCDO says brings on the spot fines from 150 to 1800 euros (as of September 2026, source: FCDO). That is a rule about conduct, not a reason to avoid the municipality.

Carvoeiro sits in Lagoa on the candidate list, and Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago are in Loulé, so they are central too (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). Compare stays in Albufeira, Carvoeiro and Quinta do Lago before you fix the town.

West Algarve: Lagos, Luz and Meia Praia

The west suits older children. Lagos has 4 accessible beach candidates, Meia Praia among them (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). Our Portugal with kids guide calls Lagos the sweet spot for families. On the park and beach data, that holds from about age 11; below that the central strip does more for the money. Praia da Luz stays are the usual first search here.

East Algarve: Tavira, the Ria Formosa and Manta Rota

The east is the quiet end. Tavira, Barril and Manta Rota are all candidates, and Castro Marim and Vila Real de Santo António add 8 zones (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). The trade is distance from the parks.

Board basis: all inclusive, half board or self catering

The Algarve tops the Post Office resort basket table of 22 European beach destinations on price (as of July 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money). Cheap eating out is why it is our view that self catering or half board beats all inclusive here. Where prices are high, all inclusive caps the damage; in the Algarve it mostly caps the choice.

What does an Algarve family holiday cost?

Start with the package. Which? tracked an Algarve week at £1,100 per person in July 2026, down from £1,313 per person in March. That average is a seven night holiday including flights, departing on or around 2 August, for two people sharing a double or twin room (as of July 2026, source: Which?).

A family total is not that figure doubled. You need an operator quote for your own party, because a free child place changes it. Jet2holidays says it has free child places available until October 2027, including in the school holidays, and that infants under two travel free (as of September 2026, source: Jet2holidays). Our real week costs guide owns the package side.

Money on the ground is a separate line, and the Post Office prices two. Its resort basket is ten staples bought on one visit, and in Albufeira it comes to £139.65, of which a three course family meal with drinks is £77.76. Its Children's Beach Barometer is a week of beach extras for a family of four, and in the Algarve that comes to £207.85 (as of July 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money).

Source: Post Office Travel Money Family Holiday Report 2026, produced with TUI at July 2026 exchange rates. The resort basket is ten items bought on one visit, not a week of spending. The Children's Beach Barometer is a week of extras for a family of four. Neither includes flights or accommodation.

The water park visit at £96.11 is the biggest line in that week, so run the Real Cost Test on it.

Which Algarve parks fit your children's heights and ages?

Slide and Splash and Zoomarine use the same two thresholds: 1 metre tall and age 11. The junior price runs from 1 metre to 10 years, the adult price from 11 to 64 (as of September 2026, source: Slide and Splash). Zoomarine, which calls itself a theme park rather than a water park, uses the same bands. It adds that under 1 metre children enter free but must be in the booking, and are measured with shoes on (as of September 2026, source: Zoomarine).

Sources: Slide and Splash 2026 prices and calendar, Zoomarine 2026 park tickets, read September 2026. Four tickets means two adults and two children in the junior band. Zoomarine's online figures are its own published "from" prices. Slide and Splash sells online at 10% below the gate, and not on the day of the visit.

The seasons do not line up, and that is worth money. June and September are high season at Zoomarine but low season at Slide and Splash (as of September 2026, sources: Zoomarine, Slide and Splash). Buy online, because the discount does not apply at the gate.

Slide and Splash's 2026 calendar runs from April to the end of October, and it opens every day from June to September. It closes the park on eight days spread across April, May and October (as of September 2026, source: Slide and Splash). Check the calendar against your own dates before you book.

The other two parks work differently. Aqualand, at Alcantarilha, prices by age alone, with no height rule. Its box office adult ticket is 32 euros and its child ticket is 23 euros. The child band runs from 5 to 10 and the adult band from over 11. Children aged 0 to 4 go free (as of September 2026, source: Aqualand). Aquashow, at Quarteira, keeps its prices behind the booking flow. Its low season is May, June and September, and its high season is July and August. It takes 10 per cent off bookings made online before 11.59pm the day before (as of September 2026, source: Aquashow).

What is the best month to visit the Algarve?

September, then May, then October. Faro's 1991 to 2020 normals put the mean daily maximum at 26.4°C in September, against 29.4°C in July (as of September 2026, source: IPMA). September also stays dry, with 1.9 rain days of 1 mm or more.

Apply the Shoulder Season Lens and September wins on heat: thirteen days in an average July top 30°C, against three in September. If February is your only window, read our February half term guide first: a 17.0°C daily high is a beach walk, not a swimming holiday.

Easter 2027: when English and Portuguese school holidays overlap

Portuguese schools take their Easter break from 22 March to 2 April 2027 (as of September 2026, source: Diário da República). English dates vary by council. Ealing runs its Easter holiday from Friday 26 March to Friday 9 April 2027 (as of September 2026, source: Ealing Council). The overlap is 26 March to 2 April 2027. Check your own council.

May half term works the other way. Ealing's 2027 May half term runs Monday 31 May to Friday 4 June. Portuguese schools are still in term then. Their year ends on 4 June, 11 June or 30 June, by school year (as of September 2026, source: Diário da República). For every English window, see the UK school holidays guide.

Which Algarve beaches work with young children?

Start with the accessible beach candidates, because those are the zones applying for ramps and walkways. Fifty Faro district zones applied in 2026: 32 central, 11 east, 6 west and one inland river beach at Pego Fundo (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). Named central candidates include Carvoeiro, Salgados, Olhos de Água and Vilamoura, which applied rather than won.

The FCDO warns that falling rocks are a hazard, particularly in the Algarve, so do not sit at the foot of a cliff (as of September 2026, source: FCDO). A red flag means you must not enter the water, and yellow means paddling at the edge only.

The Benagil rules have changed. The Autoridade Marítima Nacional bans landing on the sand inside the Algar de Benagil, bans reaching the caves by swimming or on flotation aids, and bans unguided kayak hire in the cave area (as of September 2026, source: Autoridade Marítima Nacional). Operators face fines from 300 to 216,000 euros, so book a guided trip that stays afloat. Guided Algarve cave and inland day trips are listed on Viator.

What do UK families need to enter Portugal in 2026?

You need a UK passport issued less than 10 years before you arrive, with at least 3 months left after the day you leave the Schengen area. You may stay no more than 90 days in any 180 (as of September 2026, source: FCDO). Get a GHIC or EHIC for each family member.

ETIAS is not in operation. The European Union says no applications are being collected, and that it will announce the start date months in advance. When it starts it will cost EUR 20, and applicants under 18 and over 70 are exempt. Every child needs their own authorisation, valid up to three years or until the passport expires. An EU news item of April 2026 said UK nationals would need one from the last quarter of that year, and the EU has announced no start date since (as of September 2026, source: European Union).

The Entry Exit System is separate, and it is already running. The European Union says its phased rollout lasted until 9 April 2026, and that the EES has been fully operational at every external border crossing point using it since 10 April 2026 (as of September 2026, source: European Union). EES registration is free and the digital record lasts 3 years. Children aged 11 or younger will not have their fingerprints scanned, but can be asked for a photo (as of September 2026, source: FCDO). A child aged 17 or under travelling with an adult who is not their parent or guardian needs a letter of authorisation.

How should you plan the days in the Algarve?

Plan around the middle of the day, because an average July has 13.1 days above 30°C (as of September 2026, source: IPMA). The pattern that works is beach early, pool or indoors from about one o'clock, and back out at five. Jet2holidays gives the average flight time as 3 to 4 hours, which makes arrival day a half day (as of September 2026, source: Jet2holidays).

A rhythm that suits primary school children is arrival, a beach day, a water park day, a rest day, a boat trip, a second beach day and a town day. The FCDO notes an increased wildfire risk from April to October, so check local advice before an inland drive (as of September 2026, source: FCDO).

What should you pack for the Algarve?

Pack for strong sun and cliff paths: high factor suncream, hats, rash vests, water shoes and a shaded buggy cover. Faro sees 0.2 rain days in July and August, so a raincoat is a winter item here (as of September 2026, source: IPMA). Write down the children's height in centimetres, because the parks measure at the gate.

Our take

For most UK families with primary school children, the Algarve works best as a seven night Central Algarve week in September. Base anywhere from Portimão to the Loulé coast, buy one park day online, and spend the rest of the week on the accessible beach candidates nearby.

The one factor worth re planning around is the children's ages. Under 1 metre tall, Slide and Splash and Zoomarine are free and the beach does the work. From 1 metre to 10, the central strip earns its keep. From 11 the junior price advantage ends, and it is our view that Lagos or Tavira make the better week. Be honest about the extras too: one Post Office resort basket is £139.65 and a week of children's beach extras is £207.85 (as of July 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money).

Price your own week in the Family Budget Calculator, then check your council's 2027 term dates against the Portuguese calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which area in the Algarve is best for families?

The Central Algarve is the best area for families with children under 11: the municipalities of Portimão, Lagoa, Silves, Albufeira and the Loulé coast. Slide and Splash and Zoomarine price children from 1 metre tall to age 10 at the junior rate. And 32 of the 50 Faro district beach zones that applied for Portugal's 2026 accessible beach award are in those same municipalities (as of September 2026, sources: Slide and Splash, Zoomarine, Turismo de Portugal). From age 11 the whole family pays adult park prices, and it is our view that Lagos in the west or Tavira in the east suits older children better.

What is the best month to visit the Algarve?

September is the best month for a family, then May, then October. Faro's mean daily maximum is 26.4°C in September, with 1.9 rain days of 1 mm or more. An average July runs at 29.4°C with 13.1 days above 30°C (as of September 2026, source: IPMA 1991 to 2020 normals). October brings the rain back at 6.0 rain days. February averages a 17.0°C daily high, which is a coat and a beach walk rather than a swimming holiday.

What are the best family holidays in Portugal?

For a first family holiday in Portugal, the Algarve's central strip is the easiest week: Slide and Splash, Zoomarine, short drives and 32 accessible beach candidates in one cluster of municipalities (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). Faro Airport lists 24 UK airports with Faro routes, so most UK families fly direct (as of September 2026, source: Faro Airport). For Lisbon, Porto, Madeira and the rest of the country, our Portugal with kids guide covers the whole country.

Is Portugal a good place to travel with a 2 year old child?

Yes, with two caveats. A child under 1 metre tall enters both Slide and Splash and Zoomarine free, though Zoomarine says they must still be included in the booking (as of September 2026, sources: Slide and Splash, Zoomarine). Fifty Faro district beach zones applied for Portugal's 2026 accessible beach award, which is where ramps and walkways are going in (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). The caveats are the flag system, where a red flag means nobody enters the water, and falling rocks below cliffs (as of September 2026, source: FCDO). Bring a GHIC or EHIC for every family member.

What are the downsides of visiting Albufeira?

Albufeira's one documented downside for families is the town's Code of Conduct. The FCDO says it can bring on the spot fines from 150 to 1800 euros, for behaviour such as wearing swimwear away from the beach (as of September 2026, source: FCDO). Against that, Albufeira has 15 accessible beach candidates in 2026, more than any other Algarve municipality (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). It is a busy resort town, and it is our view that families with young children should book away from the nightlife streets.

Is Albufeira or Vilamoura better?

Both are in the Central Algarve: Albufeira is its own municipality and Vilamoura is in Loulé, so neither is an eastern base. Albufeira has 15 accessible beach candidates in 2026 and Loulé has 8, Vilamoura among them (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). For children under 11 who want water parks and a short walk to the sand, Albufeira has more of both. Vilamoura is the quieter marina base, and it is our view that it suits families who want fewer crowds more than more attractions.

How much does an Algarve family holiday cost for a UK family of 4 in 2026?

An Algarve package week averaged £1,100 per person in July 2026, down from £1,313 per person in March. Which? prices that as a seven night holiday including flights, departing on or around 2 August, for two people sharing (as of July 2026, source: Which?). A family of four needs an operator quote rather than that figure doubled, because a free child place changes the total. Jet2holidays says it has free child places available until October 2027, and that infants under two travel free (as of September 2026, source: Jet2holidays). On the ground, the Post Office prices a ten item resort basket in Albufeira at £139.65 for one visit. It prices a week of children's beach extras for a family of four at £207.85, of which a water park visit is £96.11 (as of July 2026, source: Post Office Travel Money).

Does Portugal need ETIAS for UK families in 2026?

Not yet. The European Union says ETIAS is currently not in operation, that no applications are being collected, and that it will announce the start date several months in advance (as of September 2026, source: European Union). When it does start it will cost EUR 20. Applicants under 18 and over 70 are exempt from that fee. Every traveller, including each child, needs their own authorisation, valid for up to three years or until the passport expires (as of September 2026, source: European Union). An EU news item of April 2026 said UK nationals would need one from the last quarter of that year, and the EU has announced no start date since (as of September 2026, source: European Union).

Which is nicer, Faro or Albufeira?

Faro is the airport city and the district capital, with one accessible beach candidate in 2026; Albufeira is a resort base with 15 (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). For a family beach week, Albufeira has far more of what you came for. Faro is the better day trip, for the old town, the Ria Formosa boats and the market. The Albufeira Code of Conduct, with on the spot fines from 150 to 1800 euros, applies in Albufeira and not in Faro (as of September 2026, source: FCDO).

Where to stay in Algarve for first timers?

First timers with children under 11 should stay in the Central Algarve, anywhere from Portimão to the Loulé coast. Slide and Splash is in Estombar in the Lagoa municipality, in the middle of that strip, and its junior price band runs from 1 metre tall to age 10 (as of September 2026, source: Slide and Splash). The same municipalities hold 32 of the 50 Faro district accessible beach candidates for 2026 (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). Pick the town by how far you want to walk to the sand, not by a hotel star rating.

Which Algarve beaches are pushchair-friendly?

Use Portugal's 2026 accessible beach candidate list as the starting point, because those are the zones applying for ramps and walkways. Fifty Faro district zones applied: 32 in the central municipalities, 11 in the east, 6 in the west and one inland river beach at Pego Fundo (as of September 2026, source: Turismo de Portugal). Named central candidates include Carvoeiro, Salgados, Olhos de Água, Vilamoura and Quinta do Lago, while Meia Praia and Praia da Luz cover the west and Barril and Manta Rota the east. It is a candidate list, so read it as beaches that applied rather than beaches that won.

Data Sources and Verification

We read IPMA, Turismo de Portugal, the Diário da República, GOV.UK, the FCDO, the European Union's ETIAS and EES pages, the Autoridade Marítima Nacional, Slide and Splash, Zoomarine, Aqualand, Aquashow, Jet2holidays, Which? and the Post Office Travel Money report in September 2026.

How we checked these figures

Every park price, opening date and age band on this page was read on the park's own site on 27 September 2026. The four ticket totals are arithmetic on those published prices: two adult tickets plus two junior tickets, with no other discount applied. Faro Airport's airlines and destinations list was opened in a browser on the same day, and the 24 UK airports were counted from it by hand. The package benchmark is Which?'s July 2026 average for a seven night Algarve holiday including flights, departing on or around 2 August, for two people sharing a double or twin room, so it is a per person price and not a family total. We print no family package total, because no operator search returned a quote we could read; a family needs its own quote, and a free child place changes it. The on the ground figures come from the Post Office Travel Money Family Holiday Report 2026, produced with TUI at July 2026 exchange rates. Its resort basket is ten items bought on one visit, £139.65 in Albufeira, and its Children's Beach Barometer is a week of extras for a family of four, £207.85 in the Algarve, of which the water park visit is £96.11. Climate figures are IPMA's 1991 to 2020 normals for Faro, station 554, which is one coastal station and not a west or east Algarve figure. Accessible beach counts were taken from Turismo de Portugal's 2026 candidate list by counting the Faro district rows municipality by municipality: 50 zones in total. Portuguese term dates come from Despacho 8368/2024 as amended by Despacho 10430/2026; English dates are Ealing's published calendar, used as one worked example because English dates vary by council. Sea temperatures, airport transfer times and car hire prices are absent because no owner published a figure we could read.

Park prices, term dates and entry rules change. Check your own dates and your own council before you book. Last verified September 2026.
